Iyabo Obasanjo calls for fairness in Ogun APC power transition

In a recent statement, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo—who notably aimed for the governorship of Ogun State under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC)—articulated her perspectives on the consensus method adopted to select the party’s candidate for the upcoming gubernatorial elections. With a keen understanding of the political landscape, she emphasized the importance of ensuring that this consensus arrangement does not inadvertently overlook those passionate party members who selflessly set aside their own ambitions in favor of maintaining party unity.

During her statement on Thursday, Obasanjo reflected on her journey leading up to the party’s primaries, where she consistently championed the idea of consensus as an essential strategy. She believed this approach would alleviate internal tensions, prevent harmful rifts within the party, and ultimately enhance the APC’s chances of electoral triumph in the pivotal 2027 elections. “I made it clear that I would abide by the outcome of any consensus arrangement, regardless of its direction, and I have remained true to that commitment,” she declared, demonstrating her unwavering loyalty to the party’s mission.

Following the APC’s caucus meeting on April 13, 2026, held at the party’s secretariat in Abeokuta, Obasanjo took immediate action to publicly congratulate Senator Solomon Adeola, the chosen consensus governorship candidate. This gesture also came with the difficult decision to cease all her campaigning efforts—a move that showcased her commitment to party cohesion.

However, she raised a critical point about the necessity of inclusiveness in the consensus-driven process. According to Obasanjo, it is vital to recognize and appreciate those who have dedicated their time, energy, and resources to their political aspirations yet chose to withdraw for the greater good of the party’s solidarity. She argued that the process of consensus must not inadvertently close doors to inclusivity or disregard the contributions of ambitious members who have shown unwavering support for the party.

In a more somber narrative, Obasanjo did not shy away from addressing troubling incidents that marked the caucus meeting. She lamented the alleged mistreatment of some of her devoted supporters, highlighting that a few were physically assaulted and required medical attention afterward. Such incidents stand in stark contrast to the core values of respect, order, and unity that the APC espouses.

She pointed out that while certain aspirants from a specific senatorial district were recognized for their sacrifices, she and former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Dr. Tunde Lemo, were overlooked, despite their extensive consultations and significant work across the state. This lack of acknowledgment raised questions about the true spirit of unity that the consensus is meant to foster.

Obasanjo firmly stated that if the goal of the consensus is genuine oneness, it must be pursued in a manner that appreciates every participant’s efforts and fosters an inclusive environment where all voices are heard. Despite her reservations regarding how the consensus process was managed, she reiterated her strong allegiance to the APC and committed to rallying support for both Senator Adeola and President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 elections.

Reflections on the caucus meeting revealed moments of strained relations, where her supporters faced hindrances and even physical confrontations—all of which Obasanjo chose not to escalate in the interest of party unity. “These occurrences do not reflect the values our party stands for,” she asserted, echoing a desire for a more harmonious environment moving forward.

“My campaign was built on direct engagement and honest dialogue with party leaders, local government structures, and ward members,” she explained, emphasizing the grassroots efforts and the swell of support from the Iyaniwura Foundation and beyond. These elements contributed to the APC’s strength and, she believes, merit recognition as part of the collective pursuit of party success.

Despite her critique, Obasanjo remains steadfast in her support for the APC’s goals. “I am not defecting; my commitment to the party’s success remains unwavering,” she emphasized. With a call for a more inclusive approach from party leadership, she stressed that unity must be achieved not merely through consensus but through genuine acknowledgment and respect for the contributions of all aspirants.

As Senator Obasanjo prepares for the next chapters of campaigning and collaboration within the party, she remains optimistic. “We have the experience, networks, and goodwill that are invaluable to bolstering our electoral prospects across Ogun State.

“In closing, she shared two profound Yoruba proverbs that encapsulate her message of inclusion and fairness: “Bi a ba dakẹ́, tiwa a dakẹ́”—If one remains silent, even their own may remain silent with them, and “Bí a bá fẹ́ gba nkan lọwọ ọmọ, a gbọdọ̀ fi nkan rọ́pò rẹ̀”—Even when taking something from a child, one must offer something in return. With this, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo calls us all to move towards a future marked by fairness, inclusivity, and a shared purpose, ensuring that every stakeholder feels valued as we march together on the path to victory.
