The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), South-West Zone, has called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of the armed robbers responsible for the murder of a final-year student at D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic in Itori, Ogun State. The tragic incident, which occurred during a robbery in the Eruku area on Monday night, has ignited outrage and prompted a demand for enhanced security measures in student communities across the state.
In response to the student’s death, students protested on Tuesday, blocking the Lagos-Abeokuta expressway, which caused significant traffic delays for commuters and motorists for several hours. A delegation from NANS, led by South-West Coordinator Josiah Adeyemo and including Ogun State Joint Campus Committee Chairman Olabode Faruq, along with the Polytechnic’s Students’ Union Government President, visited the institution to express condolences to the student body and management.
Adeyemo characterized the killing as a severe blow to the Nigerian student community and urged government officials to prioritize campus security. “Students deserve to learn in a peaceful and secure environment. Protecting students and educational institutions should remain a top priority for both the government and security agencies,” he stated. The delegation appealed to the Inspector-General of Police, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, and Governor Dapo Abiodun to deploy security personnel to densely populated off-campus student neighborhoods.
Additionally, the student leaders visited the Eleruku of Eruku Kingdom, Oba Ajagungbade Gbadewolu Atobatele, to discuss community-level security measures for off-campus residents. The monarch responded by announcing the deployment of ten local security operatives to enhance surveillance and prevent further incidents.
During a meeting with the NANS delegation, the Rector of D.S. Adegbenro ICT Polytechnic, Goke Rauf, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and indicated that management is actively addressing security vulnerabilities. Rauf revealed strategic measures aimed at improving student welfare and safety, including the construction of new hostels to reduce reliance on off-campus housing, strengthening campus perimeter security, rehabilitating internal roads, and introducing new welfare programs.
While the NANS delegation praised the proposed measures, they emphasized the urgency of prompt implementation to protect students’ lives and restore confidence within the campus community.
