In a statement following the settlement with YouTube, attorneys from Morgan & Morgan noted, “These social media companies have been strategizing for year to hook children early and maximize their usage with insidious features.”
Earlier in March, a Los Angeles jury found both Meta and Google liable in a separate case involving another young user, awarding her $6 million for damages related to her mental health struggles. TikTok and Snapchat both settled their cases without admitting any liability.
Additionally, in May, TikTok, Snap, Meta, and YouTube collectively agreed to pay approximately $27 million to a Kentucky school district to sidestep a trial connected to a similar set of allegations. This earlier case was viewed as a potential test case for around 1,200 lawsuits filed by school districts across the nation.
Looking ahead, a separate trial involving Meta is expected to take place in August in Oakland, where more than 30 U.S. states are pursuing legal action against the tech giant for similar claims regarding the impact of its platforms on young users’ mental health.
