This warning comes as the institution has cautioned members of the public and social media users against interacting with the purported account. Users who encounter the account have also been urged to report it immediately to Facebook management to help prevent possible fraud and impersonation.
FUTO Public Relations Officer, Orakwe Ezugwu, issued the warning in a statement released on Thursday in Owerri, the Imo State capital.According to him, the FUTO VC does not maintain or operate any personal Facebook account, confirming that the account circulating in his name is fake and has no official connection with the university’s Vice-Chancellor.The statement read, “The attention of the Management of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) has been drawn to a Facebook account using a name and photograph purporting to represent the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. I.N.S. Dozie.
“For the avoidance of doubt, the Vice-Chancellor does not operate any personal Facebook account. Consequently, any Facebook account claiming to belong to Prof. I.N.S. Dozie is fake and has no connection whatsoever with the Vice-Chancellor.“The public is, accordingly, advised to beware of fraudsters using fake accounts to scam unsuspecting individuals.
Please do not engage with or respond to anyone operating such accounts, and do not send money, gifts, passwords, account information, or other personal details through them.“The University Management urges anyone who comes across similar accounts to report them to Facebook immediately and inform the University,” the PRO said. The disclaimer may be linked to the ongoing fresh admission process, during which prospective students are awaiting the release of the list of admitted students, which is expected soon.
As applicants seek updates about their admission status, they may be more vulnerable to misleading accounts or unofficial announcements claiming to provide information about the forthcoming list.
