During a candid interview on News Central on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the celebrated Nigerian music artist David Adeleke, widely recognized by his stage name Davido, shared a significant moment from the recent Osun State gubernatorial election. He detailed how, upon learning of alleged attempts by Senate President Godswill Akpabio to influence the collation centre, he chose to publicly address the situation on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Davido explained that his concern was ignited by reports that the Senate President was making calls to the election’s result tabulation hub, an action he deemed inappropriate and one that warranted immediate public scrutiny.
Davido elaborated that his decision to speak out was not swayed by his personal regard for Akpabio, whom he described as someone he viewed as a “Godfather.” He emphasized that even a relationship of such respect would not deter him from voicing his dissent when he perceived an injustice or an attempt to subvert due process. He recounted his immediate reaction: “I heard the Senate President was trying to call the collation center and I blasted him on X, that’s like my Godfather o.” This statement underscores his commitment to transparency and accountability, even when it meant confronting influential figures.
The repercussions of his public statement were swift. Davido revealed that shortly after posting his concerns, he was inundated with messages from various individuals urging him to retract his statement. Despite persistent pressure to delete the post and de-escalate the situation, Davido remained resolute in his stance. His commitment to his principles was further tested when Aliko Dangote, a titan of African business, personally contacted him with a request to remove the controversial post. However, Davido maintained his conviction, asserting that his position had been clearly articulated and he was unwilling to backtrack on his principles, highlighting his unwavering dedication to speaking truth to power.
