Chief Dele Momodu, the revered publisher of Ovation International, has passionately called upon Nigeria’s vibrant and dynamic youth to take a more active role in the electoral processes as the nation approaches the pivotal general elections. Recognizing the immense potential of the younger generation, he emphasized that their engagement is vital for the future of democracy in Nigeria.

In a thought-provoking session held on the beautiful campus of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Ile-Ife, Osun State, Momodu addressed students and attendees at a remarkable event titled ‘Reading Time.’ This gathering, an essential part of the institution’s annual Library Week celebrations, was designed to elevate the importance of literacy, knowledge, and intellectual discourse among students. Speaking with fervor on Wednesday, he encouraged the youth to move beyond theoretical discussions surrounding politics and to immerse themselves in practical action.

Momodu articulated a stark warning about the nature of the forthcoming presidential elections, describing the political landscape as potentially tumultuous. “Politics is not for the faint-hearted,” he declared, emphasizing that the contest will be fierce, with various factions likely to engage in heated confrontations. “This presidential election is going to be a war,” he said, reminding the young electorate that the stakes are incredibly high. The winner-takes-all nature of the campaign means that each vote holds power, and the implications of victory will resonate deeply across the populace. “The president of Nigeria arguably possesses one of the most potent seats of power in the world, a position where accountability is often elusive, influencing everything from the judiciary to grassroots communities,” he observed.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s current political climate, Momodu shared insights from his personal journey, revealing that contentment has guided his choices throughout his career. He candidly discussed his previous professional relationship with President Bola Tinubu, noting that despite their history, but for a sense of moral integrity, he chose not to align himself with the current administration. Reflecting on his time as a student at OAU, he noted that his humble beginnings shaped his values, including the principle of seeking personal fulfillment rather than wealth. “I could have pursued wealth, yet I chose a path of purpose,” he stated emphatically. He recounted how if he had been motivated solely by financial gain, he would have joined the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), but he cherished the values instilled in him during his formative years at the university.

“My narrative is clear,” he said. “I have lived on a modest income and turned down opportunities to lobby for free money. People frequently question my wisdom for distancing myself from alliances that could have been lucrative. I ask myself, ‘What’s the point?’ I learned the virtue of contentment here at OAU, where my parents, despite financial hardships, sacrificed to provide me with education.”

Dr. Adebimpe Fadehan, the OAU librarian, opened the event, highlighting that the ‘Reading Time’ initiative has become a cornerstone of the Library Week festivities. She reinforced that this occasion serves far beyond ceremonial aims; it is a profound commitment to knowledge, scholarship, and the timeless influence of literature. “This event is an invitation to renew our appreciation for reading, whether for academic advantage, personal enlightenment, or sheer pleasure,” Dr. Fadehan shared, emphasizing the session’s importance, which fortifies the core mission of higher education and encourages a culture of reading among students.

In a wider context, the backdrop of uncertainty looms over the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. Reports indicate that various leading political parties, including Momodu’s own African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), are facing leadership crises. These challenges may significantly impact their ability to field candidates, drawing attention to the high stakes of the forthcoming poll as the country navigates through a transformative political landscape.

Momodu’s passionate address serves not just as a call to action but also as an inspiring reminder of the power of youth to reshape the future—a future that depends on engaged citizens willing to participate actively in the democratic process. Now more than ever, the Nigerian youth have the opportunity and the responsibility to step forward, to educate themselves, and to make their voices heard in the electoral arena.
