On Wednesday, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) formally issued certificates and nomination forms to its candidates in preparation for the upcoming elections. Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and the party’s National Leader, urged party members to move past complaints and actively engage in efforts to regain political power.During the 109th National Executive Committee meeting at the PDP National Headquarters, Wada Plaza in Abuja, Wike emphasized that political power must be earned through determination, sacrifice, and hard work, rather than being handed over freely.
He expressed confidence that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will soon provide access codes to political parties for submitting candidate information, which will affirm the legitimacy of the party’s leadership.INEC has scheduled June 26 as the date for distributing these access codes. In his address to the NEC members, Wike encouraged them to return to their constituencies to garner support for the 2027 elections, stressing that every stakeholder must play an active and meaningful role in the party’s electoral goals.
He noted that many members have enjoyed the advantages of the party’s previous years in power without recognizing the sacrifices needed to maintain political success.Wike acknowledged that challenges are inherent in political life and should not deter party members from striving for victory. He shared that his own political journey has included significant obstacles, including disputes that escalated to the Supreme Court. The former governor of Rivers State urged members to perceive the PDP’s current situation as a challenge that demands commitment, rather than a reason for despair, stating that the years without power should motivate greater resolve among members.
He reiterated that political power must be fought for and earned, pointing out that no one willingly relinquishes power to another party.Wike advised against blaming governors or elected officials for the party’s challenges, stressing that political achievements depend on organization, hard work, and collective effort. He further noted that those who strive for power tend to appreciate its value more than those who inherit political positions without substantial effort. He encouraged party members to achieve tangible political successes before the next general elections, asserting that each NEC member should be able to identify an electoral victory secured in their constituency.
Wike highlighted that winning a House of Representatives seat, a state assembly position, or any other elected office serves as a testament to commitment to the party’s development. He also advised governorship candidates to project confidence and inspire hope among supporters, noting that candidates’ attitudes and behavior have a significant effect on public perception and voter confidence.Wike expressed optimism regarding the party’s preparations, citing the successful execution of NEC meetings and the distribution of nomination forms as evidence of the PDP’s focus on its goals. He affirmed that the party is undeterred by ongoing legal issues and will continue its election preparations while navigating any court processes.
Earlier, PDP National Chairman Abdulrahman Mohammed commended party leaders, members, and stakeholders for their commitment to unity and development within the party. He called the turnout at the 109th NEC meeting a strong show of confidence in the PDP’s ability to lead democratically and contribute to national progress.Mohammed praised state chapters for conducting peaceful primary elections, which he described as indicative of the PDP’s dedication to fairness, transparency, and internal democracy. He expressed confidence in the party’s potential in future elections and urged members to stay united in their quest for electoral success.

He emphasized the importance of party leaders reaching out to those who may feel aggrieved to ensure inclusivity in the party’s activities. He acknowledged that political contests produce both winners and those left disappointed, stressing the responsibility of party leadership to foster unity and cohesion after elections. He encouraged stakeholders to prioritize the party’s collective interests over personal ambitions, reminding members that the PDP has achieved its greatest successes when united.Ohuabunwa also urged enhanced voter registration, stronger grassroots mobilization, and expansion of party membership ahead of upcoming elections.
He asserted that electoral success heavily relies on effective organization, discipline, sacrifice, and active engagement with voters nationwide. He reiterated the need for the National Executive Committee to continue providing strategic leadership to navigate future challenges.According to him, unity is the PDP’s greatest strength, and any internal divisions could hinder the party’s ability to reach its political goals.During the meeting, the PDP leadership presented Certificates of Return to its presidential candidate for 2027, Senator Sandy Onor, along with governorship and other party candidates.
