Katsina Viral Video: Police Officer Was With Vigilantes, Not Bandits, Says Force

The Nigeria Police Force has unequivocally refuted claims circulating on social media that a uniformed police officer was seen collaborating with armed bandits in Katsina State, describing such narratives as entirely false and deliberately misleading. The Force, in a statement released on Wednesday, clarified that the individuals depicted in a viral video are, in fact, members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively engaged in supporting ongoing security operations in specific Local Government Areas of the state.

The statement, issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anietie Iniedu, explained that the footage captured a standard interaction between a police officer and these recognised security volunteers. This encounter occurred as they were proceeding towards a designated operational zone. The individuals in the video are therefore not bandits, but rather duly recognised community security operatives assisting in collaborative efforts to combat criminality and bolster public safety in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the individuals featured in the video are not bandits,” the statement explicitly read. “They are duly recognised members of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) and registered hunters who are actively supporting ongoing security operations in collaboration with security agencies in Musawa and Matazu Local Government Areas of Katsina State.”

Further elaborating on the context of the interaction, the police explained that the video documented a routine exchange. “The video captured a routine interaction between a police officer and these security volunteers as they proceeded to a designated operational area in support of efforts to combat criminality and enhance public safety,” the Force stated. It emphatically declared that any insinuation contrary to this explanation is “entirely false, malicious, and intended to mislead the public.”

The Nigeria Police Force expressed its strong condemnation of what it termed the “deliberate distortion of facts and the spread of misinformation.” It highlighted that such actions have the potential to incite public anxiety, erode trust in security institutions, and significantly impede ongoing efforts to restore peace and security across the nation.

“The Nigeria Police Force strongly condemns the deliberate distortion of facts and the circulation of misinformation capable of causing public anxiety, undermining confidence in security institutions, and frustrating ongoing security operations,” the Force’s statement reiterated.

In light of this clarification, the police implored members of the public to disregard the unsubstantiated claims associated with the viral video. Citizens were urged to place their trust and reliance solely on information disseminated through official channels. This directive is crucial in ensuring that the public remains accurately informed and is not swayed by fabricated narratives designed to sow discord and mistrust.

Moreover, the Force issued a stern warning to individuals and groups found to be responsible for the creation and propagation of false information. It cautioned that such activities, particularly those capable of jeopardising public peace and security, will not be tolerated and may attract severe legal repercussions.

“The Force warns individuals and groups engaged in the creation, publication, or dissemination of false information capable of prejudicing public peace and security to desist immediately, as appropriate legal action may be taken against violators,” the statement cautioned. This warning underscores the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining truthfulness in public discourse concerning security matters and to holding accountable those who seek to undermine these efforts through deceit.

The statement concluded by reaffirming the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering commitment to collaborative security initiatives. It pledged to continue working closely with legitimate community-based security stakeholders and other relevant partners across the country. This collaborative approach is deemed essential in the ongoing and future efforts to combat crime, protect lives and property, and ultimately ensure the safety and well-being of all citizens. The Force emphasised that partnerships with community security outfits like the VGN are integral to a holistic strategy for national security.

The incident highlights the persistent challenge posed by the rapid spread of unverified information on social media platforms, particularly concerning sensitive security operations. The timely intervention and clear communication by the Nigeria Police Force are vital in countering such misinformation campaigns that can have far-reaching negative consequences on public perception and operational effectiveness. The Force’s proactive clarification aims to restore confidence and ensure that the public is aware of the genuine efforts being undertaken to secure their communities. The involvement of the Vigilante Group of Nigeria and registered hunters signifies a broader strategy that integrates local knowledge and community participation into formal security architecture, a model often promoted for its effectiveness in addressing diverse security threats across different regions of Nigeria. The emphasis on “duly recognised” members of these groups further points to an attempt by security agencies to formalise and legitimise community-based security initiatives, distinguishing them from any unsanctioned or criminal elements.
