Nelson: I smashed a glass over my ex-husband’s head, we stabbed each other, and I was pregnant.

Nollywood actress Bunmi Nelson has spoken publicly about the severe domestic violence she experienced in a previous relationship, recounting how years of tension and repeated conflict eventually led to a violent confrontation while she was pregnant.

Nelson discussed the painful experience during an interview on the Talk-to-B podcast. She explained that the problems became particularly serious when she was about four months pregnant. According to the actress, her former partner was extremely jealous and had a volatile temper. Whenever he became angry, she said, he would often destroy household items, creating an atmosphere of fear and instability in their home.

Nelson said she tolerated the situation for an extended period, hoping that things might improve. However, she eventually reached a breaking point. Recalling one especially intense argument, she said she picked up a glass and struck her former partner on the head with it. The confrontation then escalated, and both of them stabbed each other even though she was still pregnant.

The actress said the situation became so dangerous that she locked the door because she feared they could kill each other that day. She also made it clear that the incident was not an isolated occurrence, revealing that domestic violence had taken place in the relationship before that confrontation. Eventually, she made the difficult decision to leave.

Nelson added that she had stepped away from the movie industry after marrying him, giving up important aspects of her career and personal life in an effort to make the relationship work. She further disclosed that her father had initially objected to the marriage, although she went ahead with the decision at the time.

Based on her experience, Nelson advised people living in unhealthy or abusive relationships to consider separating when the situation can no longer be repaired. She warned against allowing repeated violence to continue, emphasizing the importance of safety and recognizing when leaving may be necessary.

In her words, “I went straight into the bar stand, and I took a glass and smashed it on his head. That was it. We stabbed each other that day, and I was pregnant. That was the height of it.”
