The Labour Party (LP) has designated its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, thereby excluding candidates from Northern Nigeria from seeking the position under its banner.Senator Nenadi Usman, the Chairman of the party’s National Caretaker Committee, made this announcement on Tuesday in Abuja after a meeting with representatives from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Usman stated that this decision is aimed at providing clear guidelines for potential candidates ahead of the upcoming general elections.“Explicitly, we have made a decisive choice: the presidential candidacy will not include any aspirants from Northern Nigeria.

This position is officially allocated to Southern Nigeria,” she remarked. She further added, “Should any candidate from the North express interest in contesting, we will regrettably have to decline their application.” Despite this zoning policy, Usman emphasized that the party will uphold democratic procedures in candidate selection. “At this juncture, I cannot disclose who the candidate will be, as transparency and democracy must be maintained.

The selection will occur through primaries where the members will determine the candidate based on their votes,” she explained. In additional updates, Usman confirmed that a High Court in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, dismissed a lawsuit questioning the legitimacy of the party’s National Caretaker Committee. “The court ruled that the plaintiffs lacked the standing to pursue the case. The judgment was commendable as it upheld the principles of fairness,” she remarked. The LP Chairman also indicated potential adjustments to the schedule for upcoming party congresses, originally slated to commence on Thursday, March 26.

According to her, rescheduling might be essential to accommodate the increasing number of new members joining the party. “Maintaining the original date could disenfranchise several individuals. It would be prudent for the group to collaboratively establish a new date,” she noted.Furthermore, Usman disclosed that the party has formally reported a recent security breach involving its assets to the Nigerian Police.

She expressed confidence that the investigation will be thorough and that those accountable will face appropriate repercussions, highlighting the necessity of such actions to prevent further incidents of political violence.
