“If my wife buys a house without my consent, I will not move in because I am an African husband,” Adebayo said.

Nollywood actor Femi Adebayo has emphasized the importance of open communication, mutual consultation, and transparency in marriage. He said he would feel uncomfortable moving into a home his wife had bought and furnished without first informing him or involving him in the decision.

Adebayo made the remarks during an interview featured in a video posted by VJ AdamsTV on Tuesday, September 1, 2026. He was responding to a hypothetical question about how married couples should handle major decisions, personal finances, and shared living arrangements. The host asked him to consider a situation in which a married woman independently spent her money to purchase and furnish a house on Lagos Island.

After completing the project, she then asked her husband, whose workplace was on the mainland, to move into the new property with her. The scenario raised questions about whether one spouse can make a significant financial and domestic decision alone and expect the other partner to immediately adjust. When asked how he would respond if he were in the husband’s position, Adebayo said the home’s location would be his first practical concern.

Since his workplace was on the mainland, he explained that commuting from the Island every day could affect his routine and make it difficult to manage his professional responsibilities comfortably. He said he would therefore be more likely to remain on the mainland during the week while allowing his wife to live at the new residence on Lagos Island.

Rather than treating the situation as an outright disagreement, he suggested that the couple could establish an arrangement that took both partners’ needs into account. Under that arrangement, they could spend their weekends together at the new home, giving them time to reconnect and enjoy the property as a couple.

Adebayo described this approach as a possible compromise. In his view, it would allow both spouses to preserve their established routines while continuing to spend meaningful, quality time together. His comments also underscored his belief that major decisions involving property, finances, and family life should be discussed openly between married partners before they are finalized.

However, the actor explained that his greater concern would be discovering that the property had been purchased without his knowledge or involvement. He emphasized that the issue was not necessarily whether a wife used her own money to buy property. Rather, he questioned whether significant decisions affecting the household and the family should be made without open communication between spouses.

“If my wife bought a house without my consent, I wouldn’t move in, because an African husband expects transparency and submission,” Adebayo said.He clarified that this view reflected his personal understanding of marriage and the cultural values that shaped his expectations, not an effort to control his wife’s financial resources or prevent her from making independent financial decisions. The actor described himself as an African man who expects to be informed about major matters involving the family.

In his view, discussing decisions such as purchasing a home helps spouses maintain openness, mutual understanding, and trust. He added that consultation allows both partners to consider how such a decision could affect their routines, responsibilities, and future plans.Adebayo further argued that the same principle should apply equally to both partners. He noted that a husband who secretly purchased property without informing his wife could likewise cause tension, raise questions about communication, and weaken the trust expected within a marriage.Watch headline quotes from (00:28:36–00:30:13):
