Nigerian social activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as Verydarkman, has stirred debate after declaring that he does not regard any Nigerian celebrity as greater than him. According to the activist, greatness should not be judged by money, luxury cars, expensive houses, or social status. Instead, he believes a person’s influence should be measured by the number of lives they have touched and the people who have benefited from their actions.Verydarkman made the remarks while discussing his personal understanding of success and influence. He argued that many people define being “big” by looking at wealth and material possessions, but said those standards do not determine his own sense of achievement.“I swear to God, for the whole Nigeria, I don’t see a celebrity that’s bigger than me.
I keep saying it one million times. Call anybody’s name. Because when you think about bigger, una dey look money, una dey look car, una dey look house. Those are not what I… those are not my own balance. That’s not what I look as big,” he said. The activist explained that he is more concerned with the practical effect people have on society. In his view, the important questions are how many individuals have benefited from someone’s efforts, how many lives have changed because of that person, and whether people can genuinely point to specific positive outcomes linked to their influence.“I want to know who don impact. How many people don’t benefit from you. How many don’t talk say ‘na because of this guy thing happen’.
I’m not their mate. We are not on the same level,” he added. His comments have generated mixed reactions on social media. Some users supported his argument that influence should be evaluated through social impact rather than wealth, fame, or possessions. Others, however, criticized him for sounding increasingly boastful and argued that celebrities and activists operate in different spheres, making direct comparisons difficult.KAbstraction wrote that celebrities should be allowed to use their platforms for activism if they choose to do so, while ogbafians simply agreed with Verydarkman’s position.Promzy criticized the activist for what he described as self-contradictory statements.
He argued that celebrities and activists influence people in different ways and are each significant within their respective fields, suggesting that Verydarkman should compare himself with fellow activists instead.Jacky UTD brought up Davido’s reported political influence, claiming that the singer played a major role in helping his uncle defeat the APC in the Osun State election and challenging Verydarkman to accomplish something similar before making such statements.Other commenters accused the activist of allowing public praise to fuel his confidence and turn his remarks into regular bragging.
Adex Şammy said the comment was not amusing, while Richard Erukunu warned that excessive pride could eventually lead to a downfall. BigVibes also said Verydarkman appeared to be becoming too proud, and Dbjay argued that Shoday was more influential than him. Big Sman, meanwhile, complained that Verydarkman talks too much. The debate highlights the continuing disagreement over how public influence should be measured. While some people value activism, advocacy, and direct social impact, others place greater emphasis on entertainment success, political influence, financial achievements, or popularity. Verydarkman’s comments have therefore prompted renewed discussion about whether celebrities and activists can fairly be ranked on the same scale.
