Fabiyi states he cannot attack Obasanjo but can correct the record.

During a recent broadcast on Symfoni TV’s “Niger Unfiltered,” which aired on Friday, July 31, 2026, Oladimeji Fabiyi, the Deputy National Financial Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), addressed the resurfaced tensions between former President Olusegun Obasanjo and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Fabiyi clarified that his objective was not to cast aspersions on the elder statesman, but rather to offer a more comprehensive understanding of the complexities that have shaped their enduring political association. He explicitly stated, “I’m not in a position to attack former President Obasanjo, but I am in a position to set the record straight.

” This assertion was made in the context of his belief that certain prevailing narratives concerning Atiku’s interactions with Obasanjo warrant a more detailed examination and factual exposition.Fabiyi acknowledged Obasanjo’s stature as a revered elder statesman, recognizing his significant contributions to the advancement of Nigeria’s democratic landscape, which are broadly acknowledged across the nation.

Nevertheless, he posited that this profound respect for the former president should not serve as an impediment to the presentation of factual accounts or the articulation of alternative viewpoints on pivotal historical episodes involving these two prominent political figures. The ADC leader emphasized that Atiku has, for an extended period, largely refrained from publicly responding to numerous criticisms leveled against him by Obasanjo.

He suggested that the Nigerian populace would be better served by awaiting Atiku’s own forthcoming narrative before drawing definitive conclusions about the nature and substance of their political divergences.

Furthermore, Fabiyi contended that a nuanced comprehension of political history is best achieved by actively seeking out and considering the perspectives of all involved parties, rather than adhering to a singular, potentially biased, account.

He argued that this inclusive approach would empower Nigerians to render more informed judgments regarding past events and the multifaceted roles played by the key political personalities involved.

In concluding his remarks, Fabiyi expressed strong anticipation for Atiku’s impending memoir, believing it will furnish invaluable insights into the issues that have characterized his relationship with Obasanjo. This, he concluded, would ultimately enable Nigerians to critically evaluate both accounts, thereby facilitating the formation of well-reasoned opinions.
