Former Anambra State Governor and presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has recalled an exchange with a former Nigerian president who questioned whether residents were satisfied with Obi’s administration.Obi said that during a visit to the president, he was told that many people in Anambra State were unhappy with his leadership. In response, Obi explained that his responsibility as governor was not to pursue personal popularity or ensure that every individual felt pleased with him.
Instead, he said, his focus was on delivering measurable improvements and long-term development for the state.According to Obi, the commitments he made to Anambra residents centered on practical priorities, including renovating and improving schools and strengthening the healthcare system.
He emphasized that his promises involved using public resources to provide services and build infrastructure, not distributing government funds directly to individuals.Obi also suggested that some members of the political elite may have viewed his administration unfavorably because they expected access to public money.
However, he said he declined to use state resources for personal or political patronage, choosing instead to direct them toward projects intended to benefit the wider population.Recalling the conversation, Obi said, “I went to see a President then who told me, ‘Peter, nobody is happy with you.’ And I said, ‘Mr. President, I didn’t promise people happiness. I promised to fix schools. I promised to fix health.’”Watch from 15:32 to 15:42 for the full remark.
