Human rights activist Aisha Yesufu has called on Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), to direct his supporters to stop attacking followers of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.Yesufu made the appeal in a post on her verified X account on Tuesday evening. She alleged that some of Atiku’s supporters had launched what she described as a “rampage” on social media, targeting Obi’s supporters with hostile comments and personal attacks.
She added that she had also become one of the targets of the online attacks. The co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls movement said she expected a higher level of restraint and political maturity from Atiku’s supporters, particularly because she and the former vice president had previously belonged to and worked within the same political party.“An appeal to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to call his supporters to order. They have been on a rampage on social media attacking supporters of Mr. Peter Obi.
I have been one of their targets,” Yesufu wrote. She further urged supporters of the opposition figures to uphold political decency, mutual respect, and sportsmanship, arguing that internal disagreements should not overshadow the broader political objective. In her view, opposition supporters should focus their energy on challenging the All Progressives Congress (APC) and President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections rather than engaging in attacks against one another.
