Tottenham Hotspur, under the guidance of manager Roberto De Zerbi, is reportedly exploring a compelling acquisition: a World Cup standout who previously donned the colours of rivals Arsenal. This potential signing adds another layer to an already active summer transfer window for the North London club.
De Zerbi has been busy reinforcing the squad, with significant investments made in key positions. Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have arrived from Newcastle United and West Ham United, respectively, in a substantial combined deal worth £185 million, signalling a clear intent to strengthen the midfield. The defensive line has also seen additions, with Jan Paul van Hecke being recruited from Brighton & Hove Albion. Furthermore, experienced defenders Marcos Senesi and Andrew Robertson have joined as free agents, bolstering the backline with their proven quality. The goalkeeping department has been addressed with the arrival of third-choice keeper Martin Dubravka, a seasoned professional expected to provide crucial backup to the established duo of Guglielmo Vicario and Antonín Kinský.
In a notable development, club captain Cristian Romero appears to be on the verge of a move to Inter Milan, with reports indicating that a transfer agreement in the region of £34 million has been reached between the two clubs. Despite having already committed over £220 million to new signings during this transfer window, Tottenham’s ambition shows no signs of waning, as they are actively pursuing further reinforcements.
The Lilywhites are understood to be keenly interested in two attacking talents: Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo and Benfica winger Andreas Schjelderup. Notably, Portuguese media suggests that Tottenham has already submitted a formal offer of £47 million for the latter.
Adding to the intrigue, The Sun reported on Tuesday, August 4th, that Folarin Balogun, the prolific USMNT forward currently with AS Monaco, has been presented to Tottenham through intermediary channels. This move aligns with De Zerbi’s objective to introduce greater competition for current striker Dominic Solanke. Balogun’s representatives have proactively approached Spurs with a proposal, and the club is reportedly giving serious consideration to lodging an official bid. Monaco, for their part, are understood to be open to a sale, provided the financial terms are agreeable. Balogun, whose contract with Monaco extends until 2028, showcased his considerable talent on the global stage during the recent World Cup, where his impressive tally of three goals was instrumental in the co-hosts’ progression to the round of 16. At the club level, the 25-year-old enjoyed a highly productive season last term, netting 18 goals in 40 appearances across all competitions. His journey to Monaco in 2023 followed two successful loan spells at Reims and Middlesbrough, during which time he was still under contract with Arsenal. Balogun’s formative years were spent in Arsenal’s academy, joining in 2008, and he eventually made his senior debut for the Gunners in a Europa League fixture in 2020. In total, he registered 10 appearances for Arsenal’s first team, contributing two goals and one assist before embarking on his career abroad.
Beyond Balogun, Tottenham’s transfer radar also includes Chelsea’s Nicolas Jackson, though no direct negotiations have commenced between the clubs at this juncture. Aston Villa and Newcastle United are also reportedly monitoring the situation of the Senegal international. Another prominent name linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is Galatasaray’s Victor Osimhen. However, the Nigerian striker’s substantial valuation, estimated between £60-70 million, is considered a potential stumbling block that could derail any prospective negotiations.
Reflecting on his approach to the transfer market, De Zerbi recently likened himself to a ‘shark’ when he identifies a primary transfer target. “In the transfer market when I want one player I become like a shark, No chance to say no!” he stated to Football London. He further elaborated on the ongoing transfer window, indicating that approximately 60% of his strategic objectives have been met, while hinting at further significant acquisitions: “The transfer market, it’s not finished for sure, but we completed 60 per cent of our project in the transfer market. Now we have another bomba!” The summer transfer window is scheduled to conclude on September 1st.
