SA envoy explains Ayra Starr’s visa denial.

The South African Consul-General to Nigeria, Professor Bobby Moroe, recently provided clarification regarding the circumstances surrounding the visa denial experienced by Nigerian singer Ayra Starr when she applied to visit South Africa. This development comes amid a backdrop of heightened scrutiny regarding the treatment of Black Africans from various nations within the region, particularly after South African citizens vocalized their frustrations, calling for the departure of immigrants from other African countries. This turbulent climate was further complicated when South African artist Tyla’s management team announced that Nigeria was among the destinations slated for her upcoming performance tour.

In light of this situation, there has been considerable backlash from Nigerian citizens, many of whom expressed that Tyla should be barred from entering Nigeria. Their sentiment stems from the perceived injustice concerning Ayra Starr’s visa denial, which became a rallying point for discussions about fairness and equitable treatment for African artists traveling within the continent.

In response to the rising tension and misunderstandings, Professor Moroe engaged with media representatives from Punch, shedding light on the reasons behind Ayra Starr’s visa rejection. He explained that the denial was due to the submission of an improper yellow fever certificate by her team. Importantly, he emphasized that this visa issue was not a recent occurrence, as some had suggested, but rather dated back to February 2024. This timeline is crucial as it illustrates that the incident itself is being misleadingly framed in the context of current events.

The Consul-General elaborated that the resurgence of controversy surrounding Ayra Starr, along with the subsequent denial of entry visas, provoked the South African diplomatic mission to reach out to her team for a dialogue aimed at clarifying the requirements necessary for securing a visa. He emphasized that the rejection of her request was strictly due to the failure to meet these specific visa prerequisites and was not influenced by her celebrity status or her identity as a Nigerian national seeking entry into South Africa.

He elaborated on the nature of the visa application shortcomings, noting, “I do not see the relevance of Ayra Starr’s rejection to the developments we are witnessing today, other than potentially using it as a means to create unnecessary divisions within the community.” The consul explained further that one major complication stemmed from the fact that Ayra Starr’s team had inadvertently submitted a yellow fever certificate that belonged to another country. They were meant to provide the certificate issued by their home country, and this oversight was pivotal in the outcome of the visa application.

Fortunately, Professor Moroe remarked that the matter had since been resolved amicably, culminating in Ayra Starr being granted a one-year visa, thus allowing her to perform in South Africa in 2024. He emphasized that this critical detail has often been overlooked in current narratives surrounding the incident.

In a profound statement regarding the principles of visa issuance, he concluded, “If you fulfill the necessary requirements for obtaining a visa, it does not matter whether you are a renowned star or an everyday citizen, regardless of your height, race, or background; if you meet the qualification criteria, you will be granted a visa. Conversely, if you do not satisfy these conditions, the immigration authorities will uphold the laws governing entry into the country without exception.” This statement underscores his commitment to maintaining the integrity of South Africa’s immigration policies while also addressing the misunderstandings that have arisen in the wake of Ayra Starr’s unfortunate visa denial.
