OBJ said the Ooni offered to plead with Abacha to leave him alone, but he asked why he should plead and what he had done.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has recalled the circumstances surrounding his arrest in 1995 by the late military Head of State, General Sani Abacha. In a video shared by Advocacy For Good Governance, Obasanjo explained that the late Ooni of Ife invited him to a meeting in Ikeja. He said he left his farm in the early hours of the morning and traveled to Ikeja to meet the traditional ruler.According to Obasanjo, the Ooni told him that he and several others planned to approach Abacha and plead with him to stop pursuing or harassing Obasanjo.

Obasanjo said he questioned why anyone needed to appeal to Abacha on his behalf and asked what offense he had committed that would require such intervention. He added that he told the Ooni there was no reason to beg Abacha because he believed he had done nothing wrong.

However, shortly after returning to his farm, Obasanjo said Abacha sent police officers to arrest him.Recounting the conversation in his own words, Obasanjo said: “I left my farm very early. I went to see Ooni in Ikeja and Ooni said they would want to go and beg Abacha. I said beg him for what? He said to leave me alone. I said leave me alone for what, what have I done?”The portion of the video in which Obasanjo discusses the incident can be viewed from 9:06 to 9:25.
