Osa Director, the National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), praised Peter Obi for the substantial personal sacrifices he made after completing his tenure as governor of Anambra State.During an interview with Signature TV on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Director discussed Obi’s record in public service and the decisions he made after leaving office. He drew particular attention to Obi’s refusal to accept benefits commonly provided to former governors, including land allocations and what Director described as substantial retirement funds.
These benefits are often regarded as part of the privileges associated with serving as a state governor.Director said Obi’s decision was especially significant because it was made at a time when he had no assurance that he would return to politics or seek another elected office. According to him, Obi could not have been motivated by expectations of a future political campaign, since there was no certainty that he would contest another election.
His decision, therefore, reflected a personal choice made independently of any confirmed political ambition.“He didn’t know he would be contesting again when he rejected those plots and hefty retirement benefits,” he said.Director described Obi’s actions as sacrifices that many politicians might be unwilling to make after leaving public office.
He noted that Obi had the opportunity to accept the land and financial benefits but deliberately chose to reject them. In Director’s view, the decision carried even greater weight because Obi made it before knowing whether he would ever reenter politics, seek another elected position, or continue his public career in a different capacity.
Through these statements, Director maintained that Obi’s choices after leaving office should be considered when assessing his broader record of public service. He suggested that declining benefits typically associated with former political officeholders demonstrated a willingness to place personal principles, restraint, and public-minded values above the material advantages that can accompany political positions.
The remarks come as political discussions continue to examine Obi’s administration in Anambra State, including the decisions made during his tenure, and his subsequent emergence as a prominent figure in Nigerian politics. They add to the ongoing debate over how his conduct in and after office has shaped public perceptions of his leadership and political career.Watch the video from timestamp 31:34 to 31:51.
