In a significant move to bolster the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), the Confederation of African Football (CAF) has dramatically doubled the championship’s top prize. The winners will now receive a substantial $2 million, a considerable leap from the previous $1 million awarded. This exciting announcement arrives just as the tournament’s final is set to unfold, featuring a compelling showdown between Malawi and Cameroon. This latest financial enhancement underscores CAF’s unwavering commitment to elevating the profile and financial standing of women’s football across the continent.
The upcoming 2026 WAFCON, scheduled to be hosted in Morocco from July 25 to August 16, will also mark a historic milestone by expanding its participating teams to 16 for the very first time in its illustrious history, promising an even more competitive and engaging spectacle. This impressive doubling of the winners’ prize money follows a significant increase implemented just a year prior, when the top award was raised from $500,000 to $1 million.
The current 100% increment to $2 million demonstrates a consistent and ambitious strategy to invest in the women’s game. Beyond the coveted first-place prize, the overall prize fund has seen a robust 67% surge, climbing from $3.475 million to an impressive $5.8 million, reflecting a more equitable distribution of rewards across the competition.Further demonstrating this commitment to rewarding success and participation, the runners-up will now be presented with $750,000, marking a notable 50% increase in their prize money. The third-placed team will also benefit from a substantial 43% rise in their earnings.
Moreover, CAF has enhanced the participation funding for each of the 16 competing nations, increasing it to $150,000 per team, up from $125,000 in the previous edition. This 20% uplift ensures that all participating teams, including formidable contenders like the Super Falcons of Nigeria, receive greater financial support.CAF highlighted the extraordinary financial growth of the WAFCON, stating in a recent press release that the winners’ prize money has experienced an astonishing 900% increase since the current leadership assumed office.
“Since the current CAF leadership assumed office, the prize money of the winner has increased by 900 per cent from $200,000 to $2m and the total prize money has increased by 495 per cent from $975,000 to $5.8m,” the organization proudly announced on its website. With these substantial financial incentives now in place, the stakes for the WAFCON final between Malawi and Cameroon have been significantly heightened, adding an extra layer of excitement as both teams vie for the prestigious title and the life-changing $2 million winners’ cheque.
