Liverpool suffered one of their most dismal losses of the season as Manchester City destroyed them 4-0 with a brutal display. Erling Haaland’s accurate finishing and Antoine Semenyo’s inventiveness proved to be too much for a disorganised Liverpool team that had trouble in both attack and defence, as the home team controlled the game from beginning to end.

After Virgil van Dijk committed a foul inside the box, Haaland scored from the penalty spot to give Man City the lead in the first half. Just before halftime, the Norwegian striker increased the lead by rising to meet a perfect cross with a strong header. Semenyo doubled the lead with a calm finish after Liverpool failed to react, and Haaland completed his brace with a confident strike off the woodwork.
Although they had moments, Liverpool lacked innovation. The Reds had a tough afternoon as Mohamed Salah came closest, but James Trafford saved his penalty. Throughout the game, their performance was characterised by defensive errors, lost opportunities, and a lack of unity.
Five of Liverpool’s Worst Players in the Loss
- At the centre of defence, Virgil van Dijk had a challenging performance. He found it difficult to handle Haaland’s movement and physical presence, and his foul immediately resulted in the first goal.
- Mohamed Salah had chances to alter the course of the match but fell short. Despite a few dangerous moves, he lacked his customary poise in front of goal, and his missed penalty proved costly.
- Joe Gomez struggled to contain the strength of City’s attack. After failing to offer solidity at the back and committing needless fouls, he was eventually replaced.
- Hugo Ekitike fired over from close range, squandering Liverpool’s finest early opportunity. His overall contribution was minor, and before being substituted, he did not cause any problems
5. Ryan Gravenberch received a yellow card for a careless challenge after struggling in midfield. He finished a subpar effort by losing control of the tempo and was forced off owing to injury.
