Johan Martinez, a 16-year-old Ecuadorian winger from Independiente del Valle, has signed a deal in principle with Newcastle United, making it one of the most exciting acquisitions of the year.

The two teams have already reached a verbal agreement, and they want to execute all formal paperwork this week, according to transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. Due to international laws governing the transfer of minors, Martinez, who was born in 2009, will not be joining Newcastle right away. Instead, he will stay at Independiente del Valle until he reaches eighteen in 2027, at which point he will formally relocate to England.
Newcastle beat a number of elite European teams to recruit him, including Bayer Leverkusen and other Premier League teams who had been keeping a close eye on the teenager. The agreement is reportedly valued about 3 million euros. Before Newcastle took strong action to get the young player, Liverpool had also been connected to him.

Martinez is a left-footed winger who can play as a central striker and is at ease on both flanks. He is characterized as explosive, possessing remarkable speed and an innate ability to defeat opponents one-on-one. For the past two years, scouts from all over Europe have been drawn to his young performances even though he hasn’t yet made his senior debut for Independiente del Valle.
The signing is the result of Newcastle’s expanding scouting network in South America. This deal is the first significant outcome of the club’s December appointment of a specialist talent scout for Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador.

Independiente del Valle is still one of the most successful academies in South America. In just one year, the Ecuadorian team has now sent players to Borussia Dortmund, Newcastle, Arsenal, and Chelsea.
Martinez is a perfect example of the kind of forward-thinking hiring that Newcastle’s ownership has supported since acquiring the team. One of the most promising young players in South America has joined the Magpies, and the Premier League will be eagerly monitoring his progress.
