Davido told a former presidential aide that he entered politics unintentionally.

A report from The Punch, published on Thursday, August 6, 2026, detailed a significant social media uproar directed at Bashir Ahmad, a former presidential aide. The controversy erupted when Ahmad invoked the Grammy Award won by South African singer Tyla during a contentious online exchange with prominent Afrobeats artist Davido. This dispute, which initially revolved around political matters concerning the impending August 15 Osun State governorship election, ultimately broadened into a wider discussion encompassing musical accolades, public influence, and individual achievements.

The initial spark for this heated debate was ignited by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga’s announcement that President Bola Tinubu had ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to unfreeze the bank accounts belonging to the Osun State Government. This decision, it was reported, followed direct deliberations between the President and the current Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke.

Davido, whose uncle was a candidate in the governorship election representing the Accord Party, expressed his approval of the presidential directive, asserting that he had personally witnessed the circumstances that led to it. Ahmad, in response, declared that he had saved Davido’s statement and intended to revisit it after the election, particularly if the electoral outcome proved unfavorable to his expectations. The verbal sparring escalated when Davido alluded to the possibility of electoral manipulation and sarcastically referenced Ahmad’s past performance in a party primary election. Subsequently, Ahmad shifted the focus of the conversation away from political discourse, posing a pointed question about why Davido, despite garnering numerous award nominations, had yet to secure a Grammy Award.

He further contended that politicians who foresee potential electoral defeat often preemptively raise accusations of fraud before voting even commences.Davido vehemently refuted Ahmad’s assertion, arguing that the acquisition of awards is not the sole determinant of success. He elaborated on his accomplishments by citing his sold-out concert tours, billions of music streams, widespread international acclaim, and a substantial and dedicated global fanbase as concrete evidence of his impact and achievements.Adding a personal dimension to the exchange, the singer directed a pointed remark at Ahmad, characterizing him as an “accidental politician” and a “small boy.

” Davido accused the former presidential aide of having spent eight years in government without enacting any discernible positive change within his community. He emphasized his own commitment to continuing to leverage his musical platform to inspire and empower young individuals. The online confrontation took another unexpected turn when Ahmad initially posted an AI-generated image depicting Davido holding a Grammy Award. He then followed this with an actual photograph of Tyla proudly displaying her Grammy, seemingly employing this visual to further taunt Davido regarding his Grammy record.
