A leadership crisis is emerging within the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as a faction of the party has officially submitted a petition to the United States embassy in Abuja. The petition alleges that certain members are attempting to take control of the party and compromise its internal democratic processes. The faction, led by Nafiu Bala Gombe, is urging the U.S. to consider implementing sanctions, including visa restrictions, against individuals purportedly involved in the unconstitutional assumption of the party’s leadership. In the formal complaint sent to the embassy, Gombe claims to be the legitimate leader of the party and asserts that certain unnamed politicians have violated the ADC’s rules and failed to adhere to the appropriate protocols. He indicated that this situation arose following the resignation of the former National Chairman, Ralph Okey Nwosu, and several members of the National Working Committee (NWC).Gombe’s petition states, “I am writing in my capacity as the Authentic National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC). I aim to address a critical issue within our party that jeopardizes both the democratic process and the rule of law in Nigeria.
As an emblem of democracy and a protector of constitutional processes worldwide, we request that the Embassy acknowledges this situation and takes appropriate action against the undemocratic usurpation of our party.””Our complaint arises from a clear violation of the ADC Constitution due to the voluntary resignations of our former National Chairman, Mr. Ralph Okey Nwosu, and other NWC members.
When the National Chairman position becomes vacant, the Deputy National Chairman is mandated to take over for continuity. Given the resignations, I, Hon. Nafiu Bala, remain the sole Deputy National Chairman who did not resign. Therefore, it was my obligation, as stipulated by law and adherence to proper procedures, to assume leadership of the party’s affairs. Thus, by constitutional right and due process, the responsibility of leadership fell to me.””However, our legitimate path to leadership has been obstructed by external political forces seeking power from various parties. These individuals are attempting to seize control of the ADC and assume leadership without adherence to our party’s established rules and procedures. We have escalated our concerns to the judiciary to seek justice in alignment with our protocols, yet our opponents have resorted to propaganda. They falsely assert that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsing and utilizing the court system to suppress their aspirations. We wish to clarify that we have no affiliation or connection with President Tinubu or his political party, the All Progressives Congress.”In his petition, Gombe urged the United States to take note of what he termed “anti-democratic practices” within the party.
He emphasized that the petition aims to safeguard democratic practices and ensure proper legal adherence in Nigeria. He further stated, “We respectfully request that if these undemocratic elements succeed in commandeering our party leadership through unconstitutional means, the United States should contemplate imposing sanctions against them. Specifically, we advocate for the revocation or denial of any special privileges, such as visas or diplomatic treatment typically accorded to genuine democrats and democratic leaders.””Such measures would clearly signal that the international community will not tolerate the erosion of our party’s internal democracy and constitutional processes. We value your continued support in fostering and promoting emerging democracies to achieve good governance globally. We trust that you will regard our appeal seriously and act promptly, as this is crucial for equity and the future of democracy in Nigeria.
