Chelsea promised to give the £74 million Manchester United player “anything he wanted” in exchange for a transfer.

According to Metro, Chelsea FC reportedly made a strong effort to sign striker Benjamin Sesko years before to his final transfer to Manchester United, even going so far as to offer the forward “anything he wanted” in order to close a deal.

The Slovenian international originally gained notoriety while playing for FC Red Bull Salzburg, where his goal-scoring exploits distinguished him as one of Europe’s most promising young forwards. He later joined Manchester United in a £74 million trade. His swift ascent made him a target for a number of elite teams, including Chelsea and United.

As early as 2022, when interest in the striker grew after his breakthrough performances, Chelsea reportedly made a significant effort to recruit Sesko. The club’s offer at the time was reportedly a reflection of their long-standing philosophy of focusing on elite young talent, and they were reportedly quite motivated to win the race for his signature.

Sesko decided against moving to the Premier League at that time, despite Chelsea’s approach. Rather, he made the option to continue his growth by joining RB Leipzig, which gave him the opportunity to hone his skills in a less demanding setting and acquire more experience. He kept getting better throughout the ensuing seasons, establishing himself as a more complete forward and scoring frequently.

During this time, Sesko was also extensively monitored by Manchester United, who continued to show interest in him as he developed in Germany. After observing his progress for a number of years, the club’s recruitment team finally made the decision to take significant action. Their perseverance paid off when they signed him to a £74 million contract, bringing him to Old Trafford as part of their long-term offensive rebuilding.

With the club investing massively on a player they hope can lead their forward line for years to come, the move to Manchester United was viewed as a big statement of intent. But after joining the Premier League, Sesko went through a phase of adjustment, just like many young forwards.

Some analysts questioned the amount of the investment since his early months at United were characterized by low goal returns. As he adjusted to new tactical requirements and a greater level of play, the increased physical demands and intensity of English football presented a challenge.

Sesko has now shown signs of development despite the early difficulties, especially under the club’s caretaker leadership. His confidence has increased and his place in the team has been strengthened by a string of significant goals, particularly pivotal late goals.
