Brother of lynched UNIJOS graduate breaks silence, names friend as alleged orchestrator in iPhone theft incident.

A somber report published by The Punch on Saturday, August 1, 2026, details the tragic allegations surrounding the death of Ibrahim Mbaya, a promising 25-year-old Political Science graduate from the University of Jos.

His grieving family has come forward to assert that Ibrahim’s brutal lynching in Jos, Plateau State, which occurred under the false accusation of stealing an iPhone, was not a spontaneous act of mob justice but rather a calculated setup orchestrated by individuals fueled by professional envy and jealousy.

Speaking with palpable pain and sorrow, Ibrahim’s younger brother, James Mbaya, recounted the horrific events. He revealed that the mob that descended upon Ibrahim falsely accused him of pilfering an iPhone 12, a charge that led to a savage beating that ultimately claimed Ibrahim’s life.

Tragically, it was only after his death that the falsity of the accusation was discovered, highlighting the devastating injustice of the situation.James Mbaya did not shy away from identifying a primary suspect, pointedly accusing one of Ibrahim’s close friends, who was also a rival in the modeling industry, of masterminding the fatal assault. “We are absolutely convinced that he was deliberately set up and subsequently murdered,” James declared, his voice heavy with grief and conviction.

“His death was a direct consequence of envy and deep-seated jealousy. Disturbingly, one of the individuals who participated in the brutal attack was, in fact, his closest friend.”Elaborating on the roots of this animosity, James explained that the animosity stemmed from a recent modeling competition. Ibrahim had achieved a commendable position as the first runner-up in the initial stage of the competition. This success, James alleges, ignited a wave of resentment and a feeling of being overshadowed in a peer, which festered into a deadly feud.

“My brother was fundamentally an honest person; he was not a thief,” James emphasized, his voice rising with a mixture of defiance and sorrow. “He had never in his life taken anything that did not rightfully belong to him. The individuals who attacked him were not only wicked but also utterly heartless. Their actions were driven by the perception that his burgeoning success posed a threat to their own aspirations.”Beyond his academic pursuits, Ibrahim was also a talented caterer and a gifted dancer. He held the esteemed position of being the first child of a respected pastor within the Church of the Brethren in Nigeria.

His untimely demise has plunged his entire family into profound devastation as they now face the agonizing task of receiving his body and preparing for his final burial in Borno State.

While confirming that the police have made arrests and have apprehended three suspects in connection with the incident, James Mbaya issued a fervent plea. He urged law enforcement authorities to diligently pursue justice and ensure that all individuals responsible for Ibrahim’s death are brought to account.

Simultaneously, he appealed to the wider public to unequivocally reject the abhorrent practice of jungle justice and to steadfastly uphold the principles of due process in all matters.
