Following Peter Obi’s criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos, Plateau State, in the wake of deadly attacks, Nigerians have expressed differing opinions on social media.

Obi has previously questioned the president’s visit, claiming that it did not involve direct interaction with the areas most impacted by the violence. His comments swiftly became popular on the internet, sparking a barrage of replies from Nigerians with varying opinions.
Many users praised Obi’s emphasis on compassionate and people-focused leadership, and a sizable number of replies demonstrated great support for his position. In order to show empathy and unity, this group believes that leadership in times of tragedy should require being physically present at the precise sites where people are impacted. They contended that residents who are already coping with loss and instability receive the incorrect message if they just visit official sites or avoid the impacted communities.
Others went on to characterise Obi as a leader who often addresses topics that impact regular Nigerians. They emphasised his attitude to public participation and governance, implying that his remarks represent a more general need for responsibility and responsiveness from people in positions of authority.
Not every response, though, agreed with Obi’s criticism. In response to his remarks, some Nigerians contended that going to the scene of an attack did not always improve the situation there. This group believes that long-term solutions to insecurity are more important than token gestures.
Calls for togetherness and a move away from political blame were also made; some people urged both public and officials to concentrate on coming up with workable solutions to deal with the ongoing violence. They emphasised that rather than using polarising narratives, the nation must work together to address insecurity.
