After a recent remark against Akor Adams, Sevilla fired their head coach.

Sevilla, an Andalusian team, has decided to let go of Argentine head coach Matias Almeyda.

After a terrible run of play that resulted in a 2-0 home loss to Valencia on Saturday, Sevilla fired head coach Matías Almeyda.

Sporting director Antonio Cordon appointed the Argentine tactician in the summer of 2025, but he only managed 32 games in all competitions, with a dismal win percentage of 10 victories, 7 ties, and 15 losses.

The last straw

The Andalusian team is currently in 15th place in La Liga with 31 points, just three points above the relegation zone. The Valencia defeat, in which Sevilla let up goals to Hugo Duro and Largie Ramazani, continued a miserable run of just one victory in eight games.

Under Almeyda, Sevilla’s defensive shortcomings were evident; they gave up a league-high 49 goals in La Liga, finally leading the club’s board to terminate his employment.

Almeyda’s recent disciplinary problems made matters worse. He was currently serving a lengthy seven-game touchline ban following an angry altercation with referee Iosu Galech during a 1-1 draw with Alavés in February.Recent remarks regarding Akor AdamsAkor Adams, a striker for the Super Eagles, was losing Almeyda’s faith prior to the dismissal, and the Argentinian’s dismissal may give his career at the team a much-needed restart.

Almeyda controversially benched Adams from the starting lineup for the pivotal Valencia match after a crushing 5-2 loss to Barcelona.

Following the 2-0 defeat, he came clean and said, “I was not happy with Akor’s last game, so I decided to make a change… We have three strikers, and I am trying different options to see who can score.

Adams, the club’s top scorer with seven goals and four assists in 23 games, has been one of the few bright spots in Sevilla’s miserable season despite the manager’s criticism.

With just four starts and one goal this season, fellow Nigerian international Chidera Ejuke has had difficulty breaking into the starting lineup. The appointment of a new manager may bring about a change in circumstances.
