A power struggle within Iran has been revealed, with reports of a succession battle involving Mojtaba Khamenei.

As of Friday, August 7, 2026, a report disseminated by the Anadolu Agency has illuminated a growing atmosphere of apprehension and conjecture concerning the current health status of Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of Iran’s paramount leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. This heightened uncertainty is further fueled by emergent reports that suggest a potential undercurrent of instability and internal discord within the highest echelons of Iran’s ruling establishment.

Further substantiating these concerns, two anonymous sources, purportedly privy to the inner workings of President Masoud Pezeshkian’s administration, have communicated with IranWire. These sources revealed that Mojtaba Khamenei has maintained a conspicuous absence from any meetings with members of the Iranian cabinet since a significant event on February 28: a reported United States strike targeting the Supreme Leader’s compound. This audacious attack, which according to initial reports claimed the lives of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei himself, alongside several members of his family, has undeniably cast a long shadow of doubt over the future trajectory of Iran’s leadership structure and the stability of its governance.

Since this alleged incident, Mojtaba Khamenei has largely retreated from public life. His prolonged silence is marked by a complete lack of public addresses, official appearances, or significant engagements. The state-controlled media has, in turn, disseminated only a minimal number of statements and written communications attributed to him, further exacerbating the prevailing speculation. This conspicuous quietude has intensified whispers and conjectures among Iranian officials, seasoned political analysts, and influential figures within the country’s elite.

The aforementioned sources elaborated that prevailing rumors among senior figures within the Islamic Republic indicate a severe deterioration in Mojtaba’s health, with suggestions that he may be in a critical condition. One source, speaking with palpable concern, indicated that news of his potential demise in the foreseeable future would not be met with surprise, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the widespread anxiety it has engendered.

Adding another layer to this complex tapestry of speculation, a regime insider identified as Mohammad Bagher Khazali has reportedly voiced allegations suggesting that Mojtaba Khamenei was previously sidelined from his father’s intimate inner circle, colloquially known as the “beyt,” for an extended period of three years. If these claims hold true, they could serve as compelling evidence that Mojtaba’s presumed path to succeeding Ayatollah Khamenei was not as assured as previously perceived, potentially hinting at underlying disagreements and power struggles regarding the future direction of Iran’s leadership.

Khazali’s allegations extend further, implicating Asghar Hejazi, a figure of considerable influence within the Supreme Leader’s office, in Mojtaba’s temporary exclusion from the inner circle. He also drew a connection between the dismissal of Hossein Taeb, a close security confidant of Mojtaba, and a broader, more intricate power struggle involving influential personalities vying for dominance and leverage within the intricate Iranian political system.

Beyond his pronouncements on Mojtaba’s political standing, Khazali also directed sharp criticism towards President Masoud Pezeshkian, characterizing him as an individual lacking the necessary qualifications and possessing a rudimentary grasp of governance. Khazali further alleged that Pezeshkian’s presidential bid only secured approval due to the intervention of Alireza Marandi, who previously served as the personal physician to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Collectively, these reports and allegations contribute significantly to the ongoing discourse and conjecture surrounding Iran’s leadership succession. However, it is crucial to note that official confirmation from Iranian authorities regarding Mojtaba Khamenei’s health condition or the veracity of the claims pertaining to internal dissension within the ruling establishment remains absent.
