Fifty elderly residents of Zamfara State continue to be held hostage by bandits after a peace negotiation attempt in June of this year proved unsuccessful. The elders from Magamin Diddi village in Maradun Local Government Area had undertaken a voluntary mission to engage in dialogue with a prominent bandit leader identified as Jammo, who reportedly operates from the Muntsira Forest.
The primary objective of this delegation was to broker a peace agreement that would enable the local populace to safely engage in agricultural activities during the current farming season. However, their overtures for peace were reportedly rebuffed by the bandits, who subsequently took all fifty delegates captive instead of reaching a consensus.
This development has amplified concerns and criticism regarding the escalating insecurity in Zamfara State, particularly given the prolonged captivity of the elders and the state government’s perceived inaction. Governor Dauda Lawal has faced accusations of failing to implement measures aimed at securing the release of the hostages.
While the state government has indicated that a thorough investigation into the incident is underway, Governor Lawal has characterized the elders’ initiative to reconcile with the bandits as both illegal and unauthorized. In remarks made to BBC Hausa, Governor Lawal expressed strong disapproval of the elders’ decision to negotiate directly with the criminal elements.
The governor stated, “They did not inform the authority before embarking on such dangerous step they have taken,” emphatically adding, “They are on their own.” This statement positions the state government as distancing itself from the consequences of the elders’ independent engagement with the bandits. The situation underscores the complex and perilous challenges faced in addressing banditry and securing the safety of communities in the region. The fate of the fifty captive elders remains uncertain as dialogue with the perpetrators has been definitively rejected by the state’s highest authority.
