Otunba Segun Showunmi, a Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has defended Nyesom Wike. He is the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. This comes amid ongoing internal crises rocking the party.

Showunmi spoke with SYMFONI in an exclusive interview. He emphasized that Wike should not be singled out as the root cause of the PDP’s challenges. He traced Wike’s involvement in the party across multiple election cycles. He highlighted Wike’s consistent presence without being labeled problematic earlier on. Showunmi pointed out that Wike was not viewed as an issue during the party’s formative years. Wike was also not seen as a problem in later national contests.
He questioned the sudden shift in perception. He suggested that recent hostilities stem from actions directed at Wike. These actions are not due to inherent flaws in his conduct. He argued that if Wike has become a source of tension in more recent times, it prompts inquiries. What circumstances or decisions within the party have contributed to his current stance?
The PDP has faced prolonged factional disputes. This includes expulsions and counter-expulsions involving Wike and other prominent figures. These disputes have weakened its cohesion ahead of future elections.”If Wike is the issue, how did he become the issue? I don’t think Wike was an issue in 1999. He was not the issue in 2003. He wasn’t the issue in 2007. He was certainly not the issue in 2011. How he have been the issue in 2015? If you call him the issue in 2019, you are just being unfair. If he becomes the issue in 2023, what did you guys do to him to make him so hostile?” Showunmi told SYMFONI.
