Tunç Davut’s deeply personal social drama, “Like a Limbless Tree,” has been officially put forward by Turkey as its contender for the prestigious Academy Award in the best international feature film category. This significant selection marks Turkey’s ambition to secure its first-ever Oscar nomination and, ultimately, a win, a feat it has only come close to achieving once before in 2008 with Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s critically acclaimed “Three Monkeys,” which made the shortlist. The upcoming 99th Academy Awards ceremony is scheduled for March 14, with the crucial submission deadline for international feature film entries set for September 30.
Davut, a filmmaker with a notable body of work including the 2015 drama “Entanglement” and the television series “Serçe” and “Kinali Kuzular,” uses “Like a Limbless Tree” to explore the profound vulnerability inherent in the human condition. This exploration is intricately woven against the pressing contemporary theme of immigration, adding layers of social commentary to the narrative. The film, brought to life by the Istanbul-based production company Tekhne Film, features compelling performances from its lead actors: Ali Ipin, Fayyaz Duman, and Selen Kurtaran.
