Spotify will now identify AI artists masquerading as humans.

In a significant move towards greater transparency and authenticity on its platform, Spotify, a titan in the global music streaming industry, has announced its intention to implement a new system for identifying artificial intelligence-generated artist profiles that falsely present themselves as human creators. These new designations, branded as “AI Persona” badges, are slated to begin their rollout in mid-September. Once implemented, these badges will be prominently displayed across various touchpoints within the Spotify user experience, including on the artist’s dedicated profile page, within search results that surface these profiles, and even within the track listings of playlists.Spotify’s announcement, disseminated through its official website, clarifies the rationale behind this initiative. While acknowledging the diverse and evolving ways artists leverage AI as a legitimate creative tool, the company emphasizes its commitment to distinguishing between profiles that genuinely represent human artists and those that do not. The statement explicitly reads, “Although there’s a broad spectrum in how artists use AI as a creative tool, the question of whether a profile represents an actual human is one where Spotify can help make a clear determination.”

Crucially, Spotify underscores that these badges are intended to address the public identity of an artist rather than to scrutinize the specific methods used in music creation itself. To facilitate this new policy, Spotify is empowering creators with a self-disclosure mechanism. Commencing this week, artists uploading new music to the platform will have the option to voluntarily declare if they are utilizing AI to construct their public persona, with the stipulation that this AI usage is not for the actual composition or production of the music. This initiative operates in parallel with Spotify’s recently introduced “AI credits” feature, which provides a separate avenue for artists to transparently share how generative AI may have been incorporated into their creative process, if at all.Beyond self-declaration, Spotify will also undertake proactive measures by independently reviewing artist profiles. The platform will employ sophisticated analysis to determine if an artist’s name, identity, or imagery appears to be artificially generated. Any user identified by Spotify as an “AI Persona” will be formally notified and afforded the opportunity to contest the label.

Once an AI badge is officially appended to a profile, listeners will be provided with clear information indicating whether the artist opted into the labeling or if Spotify applied it unilaterally.Furthermore, the implications for AI Personas extend to their content’s visibility. Music uploaded by AI Personas will be conspicuously excluded from Spotify’s recommendation engines. This means their tracks will not surface in algorithmic playlists, such as Discover Weekly, nor will they be featured in curated editorial playlists. The only pathways for an AI Persona’s music to reach a listener’s attention will be through a deliberate act of following the profile or by actively searching for their content. In a forward-looking move, Spotify also plans to equip listeners with the ability to report profiles they suspect are AI-generated, fostering a community-driven approach to maintaining authenticity. In its official announcement, Spotify articulated its core philosophy: “While we believe all artists have creative choice in determining how they present themselves, Spotify’s programming is focused on elevating music from authentic artists building careers in music.”

This statement reflects a deliberate strategy to prioritize and amplify the work of human artists who are actively cultivating their careers. The impetus for these stringent measures can be traced back to significant controversies, notably the incident last summer involving a generative AI project named The Velvet Sundown. This AI-generated entity, masquerading as a human band, rapidly garnered millions of streams within weeks. Its music also infiltrated users’ personalized playlists and third-party curated lists, amassing hundreds of thousands of followers. In response to such incidents, Spotify has been progressively enhancing its capabilities to accurately label and detect generative AI usage, including efforts to combat AI impersonations of established artists and to curb the influx of AI-generated spam uploads.Adding to its suite of authenticity tools, Spotify introduced verification badges in April. These badges serve to confirm that an artist’s identity and overall authenticity have been rigorously validated by the platform.Spotify’s heightened emphasis on transparency and authenticity aligns with a growing sentiment among audiences. Reports indicate a rising discomfort with AI-generated music.

Earlier this year, Luminate, a prominent entertainment and insights firm, published a study revealing a palpable decline in listener interest in AI-composed music, a trend particularly pronounced among younger demographics like Gen Z and Gen Alpha. As the integration of AI into the music landscape escalates, musicians themselves have become increasingly vocal. In 2024, a significant coalition of artists, including globally recognized names like Billie Eilish, J Balvin, and Stevie Wonder, collectively signed an open letter expressing serious concerns about AI’s potential to infringe upon and devalue the artistic contributions of human creators. More recently, artists like SZA and Lorde have emerged as prominent critics of artificial intelligence in music. In March, SZA conveyed her strong feelings to the digital magazine i-d, stating she feels “at war” with AI. Just last month, Lorde publicly voiced her criticism on social media regarding a Spotify feature that generates AI-powered summaries and descriptions of songs, advocating for artists to have the explicit right to opt out of such functionalities.
