Otedola acquires N20.7bn in First HoldCo shares, marking his second purchase in August.

Femi Otedola, a highly influential and prominent billionaire businessman renowned for his savvy investments and strategic insights in the financial sector, has recently found himself in the spotlight following his substantial acquisition of shares in the financial services conglomerate, First HoldCo Plc. This latest move has culminated in an astonishing investment that amounts to a remarkable N20.68 billion, reflecting Otedola’s ambitious approach to solidifying and expanding his foothold within this important market sector.

This transaction stands out as Otedola’s second significant acquisition within the bustling month of August, a period during which he has been particularly active in the marketplace. His aggressive strategy to increase his stake in First HoldCo demonstrates not only his confidence in the company’s future prospects but also his commitment to enhancing his influence within the financial landscape. Utilizing his dedicated investment platform, Calvados Global Services Limited, Mr. Otedola successfully procured an impressive total of 147,737,699 ordinary shares, which were each priced at N140. This substantial transaction has been formally recorded in a regulatory filing submitted to the Nigerian Exchange, effectively notifying stakeholders and the market at large of his expanding interests.

As a result of this recent acquisition, Otedola’s overall ownership stake in First HoldCo has surged to an impressive 27.49 percent, which translates to a substantial total of approximately 12.05 billion shares now under his control. This notable enhancement in his investment portfolio comes on the heels of another significant purchase made just a week prior, when he acquired 138.04 million shares valued at N18.11 billion. It is evident that the businessman is on a clear upward trajectory this summer; in July alone, he made two major acquisitions that collectively amounted to 706.13 million shares, with an extraordinary investment of around N77.58 billion. Additionally, he set a remarkable precedent with an earlier transaction that involved the acquisition of 1.78 billion shares, which cost him a staggering N222.21 billion.

Otedola’s sustained investment strategy has been focused on increasing his ownership in First HoldCo ever since he emerged as the group’s largest shareholder and subsequently assumed the role of chairman. Back in May, he made headlines by acquiring approximately 549.54 million shares for a significant investment of N43.41 billion. These aggressive acquisition patterns throughout the current year alone have now totaled more than N400 billion in disclosed investments, underscoring Otedola’s pronounced commitment to the financial group and signaling his confidence in its future growth and stability.

In recent conversations, Otedola has openly articulated his ambition to secure a controlling stake of over 51 percent in First HoldCo, a goal he appears fiercely determined to accomplish. He has drawn noteworthy parallels to his past investment endeavors, emphasizing the successes he has enjoyed with companies such as Forte Oil Plc—now known as Ardova Plc—and Geregu Power Plc. These case studies serve as testament to his strategic acumen, as he significantly increased his stakes in both enterprises over time. For instance, during his tenure with Forte Oil, Otedola adeptly expanded his ownership from a modest 28 percent to a commanding 75 percent before ultimately making the decision to exit the company in 2019. Similarly, he has also heightened his ownership in Geregu Power, illustrating a consistent pattern of strategic investment that seeks not just growth, but also long-term control and influence in the companies he chooses to back.
