My passion for making dresses

For 45-year-old Alli Sadiat Olayinka, becoming a dressmaker represented far more than a simple career decision. It was an important step toward achieving financial independence and taking greater control of her future. After spending years working for other people, she wanted to establish a business of her own, become her own boss, and create a schedule that would give her more time to care for her children and attend to family responsibilities.Olayinka’s interest in dressmaking, however, began during her childhood.

She had always been fascinated by the skill, creativity, and precision involved in transforming fabric into attractive clothing. She also found deep satisfaction in helping women look and feel beautiful in carefully made, well-tailored outfits. Over time, this longstanding passion encouraged her to learn the trade more seriously and eventually turn an activity she loved into a profession.Today, Olayinka is a seamstress based in Agege, Lagos, with more than 15 years of experience in the profession. Although she learned how to sew at a much younger age, the knowledge and practical skills she gained during that early period later made it easier for her to transition into dressmaking as a full-time career.

Her experience has also helped her understand her clients’ preferences and produce outfits suited to different occasions and individual styles.Despite the challenges confronting businesses in the country, Olayinka considers tailoring a profitable profession, although she believes the industry still has room for improvement. She explained that the current economic situation has made it more difficult for many people to afford sewing services, as rising expenses have affected both customers and business owners.

While some months bring good returns and steady patronage, others can be disappointing and require patience and careful financial management. Her clientele extends beyond her immediate community, with customers located both within Nigeria and internationally. For Olayinka, tailoring was not the career she originally planned to pursue. She studied Geology and had hoped to work in the oil and gas industry.

However, her early interest in sewing, combined with her desire for independence and flexibility, eventually led her in a different direction. Today, dressmaking has become both a source of income and a meaningful expression of her creativity. However, the limited availability of job opportunities led her to pursue tailoring instead. She began learning the craft as a practical way to earn a living, but what initially started as a means of financial support gradually developed into a profession she genuinely enjoyed and came to love.Today, she creates a wide variety of outfits based on each client’s preferences, needs and specific requests. Her work includes traditional and contemporary designs, ranging from African prints such as Adire and Ankara to modern pieces such as fully beaded dresses and corset dresses.

She also produces corporate wear, including women’s suits and trousers, as well as two-piece sets, ready-to-wear outfits, reception dresses and wedding dresses. This range allows her to serve clients seeking clothing for professional settings, everyday wear and major social occasions. For her, however, tailoring involves more than simply cutting fabric and sewing garments. She values the opportunity to play a role in significant moments in her clients’ lives and to create clothing that helps them feel confident and prepared for important events.

She makes outfits for occasions such as weddings, naming ceremonies and graduations. According to her, many women mark important milestones by having new clothes sewn for the celebrations, and knowing that her work contributes to these memorable moments brings her considerable happiness.
