Michael Owen questions Mikel Arteta’s decision after Arsenal’s victory

According to a report published by Metro on Saturday, August 22, 2026, former Premier League striker Michael Owen questioned Mikel Arteta’s decision to introduce Mikel Merino rather than give teenage midfielder Max Dowman additional playing time during Arsenal’s convincing 3–0 victory over Coventry City.Arsenal began their Premier League title defense in impressive style at the Emirates Stadium.

Goals from Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka, and Martin Odegaard secured a comfortable win, allowing the reigning champions to control the match for long periods and avoid any serious pressure from Coventry.Arteta made five substitutions in the second half, bringing on several experienced players, including World Cup winners Martin Zubimendi and Merino. However, Owen believed the circumstances provided an excellent opportunity for Dowman to gain valuable first-team experience. With Arsenal holding a commanding lead and appearing firmly in control, the teenager could have been introduced without being placed under excessive pressure.“What’s the point of bringing Merino on?” Owen told Premier League Productions.

The former England international argued that Merino had already accumulated considerable experience at the highest level, whereas Dowman might have benefited significantly from more minutes in a match that was effectively settled. Owen’s comments reflected the view that young players often develop most effectively when they are gradually exposed to senior football in controlled situations.Owen also suggested that Dowman may be approaching an important point in his development. He believes the current season could become a breakthrough campaign for the teenage midfielder if he continues to receive opportunities and demonstrates that he can compete consistently at Premier League level.

Although Owen criticized the decision to bring on Merino, he remained highly complimentary of Arsenal’s overall performance and the quality of Arteta’s squad. He praised the team’s organization, structure, and defensive discipline, describing them as difficult opponents to break down. The result also underlined the strength available to Arteta, with several established players capable of making an impact from the substitutes’ bench. The former striker further backed Arsenal to mount another serious challenge for the Premier League title. He suggested that, provided they maintain their consistency and avoid a significant injury crisis, the club could finish the campaign with a points total in the high 80s or possibly close to 90.

Arsenal won the Premier League title last season and strengthened their squad again during the summer transfer window. Their improved depth was evident against Coventry, as Arteta was able to call upon a number of high-quality alternatives after the match had already been placed under Arsenal’s control. While Owen wanted to see Dowman receive more playing time, the victory nevertheless offered an encouraging early indication of Arsenal’s ambition and squad strength.
