‘Gunmen Boldly Target Amaechi’s Convoy in Rivers State’

As reported by The Punch on Saturday, March 7, 2026, former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi alleged on Friday that his convoy was assaulted by political thugs, who also set fire to the ward office of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in his hometown of Ubima, located in the Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State.

Amaechi was on his way to Ubima to officially join the ADC when the attack took place! Reports indicate that gunmen cowardly ambushed his convoy on the Ubima–Omuanwa road. Sources revealed that these attackers had the audacity to set up a roadblock in the area, deliberately stopping buses carrying ADC supporters from entering the community. And as if that wasn’t enough, on Thursday night, thugs suspected to be associated with this mayhem actually set fire to the ADC ward office in Ubima!Residents were alarmed, hearing sporadic gunfire, and to top it off, the gate of Amaechi’s family house was left riddled with bullets even before he arrived in the community! What a disgraceful display of violence and intimidation!

As Amaechi’s convoy neared the town at approximately 12:15 p.m., gunmen reportedly opened fire. In response, security personnel assigned to the former governor returned fire, compelling the assailants to retreat. In the aftermath of the incident, Amaechi continued with his party registration and addressed the supporters assembled at the venue. He urged members of the ADC to maintain composure and refrain from any retaliatory actions.

The former governor of Rivers State expressed his appreciation for the prompt actions taken by security agencies, specifically acknowledging the efforts of the Commissioner of Police, the Department of State Services, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.Amaechi urged the police to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident and to ensure that those culpable are prosecuted. Furthermore, he called on the state government to enhance security measures throughout Rivers State to avert any future occurrences of violence.

The spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, has confirmed the torched ADC office in Ubima. She stated that there were no casualties and noted that investigations are underway to identify and apprehend those responsible.
