Governor Sanwo-Olu has inaugurated the ₦50 billion Agege Fresh Food Logistics Hub in Lagos.

A significant advancement in Lagos State’s agricultural infrastructure was marked on August 13, 2026, with the official commissioning of the expansive Agege Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub. As reported by Punch Newspapers, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu inaugurated this 7,000-square-metre facility, strategically located at Pen Cinema in Agege. The hub is anticipated to catalyze substantial economic activity, with projections indicating annual trade transactions exceeding ₦50 billion.During the inauguration ceremony, which convened market trade unions and key municipal stakeholders, Governor Sanwo-Olu underscored the critical need for such an initiative.

He highlighted that Lagos, with its burgeoning population of over 25 million residents, currently relies on food supplies sourced from outside its borders, importing more than 70 percent of its sustenance. The governor elaborated on the historical challenges posed by elongated transport routes and fragmented distribution systems, which have consistently subjected Lagos consumers to the harsh realities of severe food inflation and considerable post-harvest losses. The newly established Agege hub is designed to directly address these persistent issues. The state-of-the-art facility boasts a capacious 4,000-square-metre main trading floor, engineered to accommodate the operations of up to 400 active vendors, fostering a dynamic marketplace.

Complementing this are 1,200 square metres dedicated to dry storage, capable of holding an impressive 800 metric tonnes of agricultural produce. Furthermore, the hub features advanced industrial cold storage units with a capacity of 300 metric tonnes, specifically designed to preserve the freshness of perishable items such as meat, poultry, and a wide array of vegetables. The development also includes an enhanced seafood market and ample logistical support, with parking facilities for 90 commercial transport vehicles. Recognizing the evolving landscape of logistics and sustainability, the hub is equipped with 10 electric vehicle (EV) charging points, paving the way for zero-emission delivery fleets. This strategic investment in centralized food infrastructure has garnered widespread acclaim from agricultural economists, municipal planners, and market leaders.

They universally acknowledge that consolidated food hubs play a pivotal role in reducing urban food prices and significantly mitigating food waste, thereby contributing to both economic efficiency and food security. The Lagos State Government has confirmed that commercial operations across all specialized sections of the Agege Mid-Level Agro-Produce Hub will commence in earnest within the next six weeks.
