Aradel Holdings Plc, a prominent indigenous energy company with integrated operations, has announced its strategic intention to commence the refining of petrol at its state-of-the-art modular refinery by the year 2027. This significant decision is a direct consequence of recent policy shifts within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, specifically the removal of fuel subsidies and the subsequent deregulation of the downstream segment. These changes have collectively created a more commercially attractive environment for domestic petrol refining, enhancing its profitability.
This forward-looking announcement was made public by Temitayo Ogunbanjo, who oversees Aradel’s refining division. His remarks were shared on the sidelines of a recent conference held in Abuja, as reported by Bloomberg. Ogunbanjo elaborated on the current operational capabilities of the refinery, which is already producing a range of refined products including kerosene, diesel, gas oil, and naphtha. He further disclosed that Aradel is actively exploring avenues for expanding the existing refining facility. This expansion consideration is intrinsically linked to securing robust crude supply arrangements and optimizing export logistics for its refined products.
Furthermore, the company is strategically evaluating the potential for significant investment in aviation fuel production, with a keen eye on the lucrative European export market. Ogunbanjo specifically highlighted the ongoing assessment of expanding the current 11,000-barrel-per-day plant, which includes a thorough examination of potential crude supply chains and the intricacies of export logistics. While specific financial figures for the planned petrol refining unit and the broader expansion initiatives have not yet been disclosed, the company anticipates that detailed investment amounts will be finalized following comprehensive engineering studies scheduled to take place over the next year. Aradel also noted that its upstream operations have benefited from favorable market conditions, with higher crude prices contributing positively to its overall earnings.
