In a recent and significant development, the esteemed Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister for the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, has announced that the remaining two-month wage award owed to our diligent federal civil servants will be disbursed by August 15, 2026, at the latest. This announcement follows a high-stakes meeting that took place in our nation’s capital, Abuja, where Mr. Oyedele met with the leadership of the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC) to resolve pressing labor issues.

This breakthrough moment was crucial in averting a looming labor confrontation. Just days before, the JNPSNC had issued an ultimatum that would have escalated into potential organized protests. Thankfully, following these productive discussions, the JNPSNC has decided to suspend their initial demand set for August 11, signaling a step towards peaceful dialogue and mutual understanding. The meeting, which took place yesterday, was chaired by Minister Oyedele and attended by an array of high-ranking officials including the Permanent Secretaries from both the Ministry of Finance (Accounts and Special Duties), the Chief of Staff to the Minister, various directors, special advisers, and other key ministry personnel.

This broad representation highlights the government’s commitment to addressing worker concerns with urgency and seriousness. On the labor side, the delegation was led by the esteemed Comrade Kabiru Ado, the National President of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria (MHWUN), alongside other prominent labor leaders, including the National Deputy President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), other JNPSNC officials, and representatives from various labor unions. Their presence underscores the collaborative spirit required to navigate workplace challenges effectively. After thorough deliberation over the welfare of federal workers, a consensus was reached that the overdue wage award will be cleared before the mid-August deadline.

Additionally, Mr. Oyedele assured the labor leaders that the federal government is committed to facilitating the long-awaited 40 percent peculiar allowance through a supplementary budget—an initiative that aims to further enhance the financial well-being of our civil servants. Moreover, the meeting touched upon the issue of outstanding promotion arrears. It was agreed that payment procedures for specific batches had been resolved, showcasing the government’s proactive stance in addressing long-standing employee concerns.Minister Oyedele took this opportunity to emphasize the importance of ongoing engagement with organized labor.

“We must maintain open lines of communication with union leaders,” he stated, “to foster a cooperative relationship that facilitates swift resolutions to workers’ welfare matters.” In a show of solidarity, Kabiru Ado reiterated the council’s dedication to protecting the interests of workers across the board. He made it clear that the JNPSNC is always prepared to advocate for fair treatment and wage support, reinforcing their mission to ensure that workers’ rights and welfare are prioritized.Additionally, National Secretary of the JNPSNC, Olowoyo Gbenga, highlighted the critical role the union leadership plays in preventing industrial crises.

He stated, “The proactive measure taken by the national leadership was to avoid national embarrassment for the federal government, as workers were prepared to occupy the minister’s office spontaneously.”Following the successful conclusion of yesterday’s meeting, Olowoyo proudly declared the suspension of the August 11 ultimatum, affirming the positive outcomes from the discussions with the Minister of Finance.

He confidently stated, “Given today’s productive dialogue with Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, we are optimistic that our agreements will be honored.”However, he also made it clear that organized labor remains vigilant and will closely monitor the implementation of the resolutions reached during the meeting, ensuring that the well-being of workers is upheld. This development marks a hopeful turn for civil servants, reflecting a government distinctly committed to addressing the needs and rights of its workforce!
