钦奈海滩将很快每天提供45分钟免费Wi-Fi。

Chennai, August 9th – Residents and tourists flocking to some of Chennai’s most beloved coastal destinations are set to benefit from a significant upgrade in public amenities. The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) is spearheading an initiative to bolster digital connectivity by installing 107 state-of-the-art Wi-Fi-enabled smart poles along the city’s expansive coastline. This ambitious project aims to significantly enhance the public Wi-Fi experience, with the new network anticipated to go live in September. Upon activation, users will be granted daily access to up to 45 minutes of complimentary internet service, a substantial increase from previous offerings.

The deployment will strategically place the majority of these advanced poles at Marina Beach, with 75 units designated for this iconic location. Besant Nagar beach will receive 20 Wi-Fi poles, and Tiruvanmiyur beach will be equipped with 10, with Airtel serving as the service provider for these installations. The financial burden of this extensive infrastructure development will be shouldered by the involved service providers, who are contributing to the project as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitments, underscoring a collaborative approach to public service enhancement.

This expansion arrives at a critical juncture, addressing widespread dissatisfaction with the performance of existing public Wi-Fi services across the city. Numerous users have voiced frustrations, reporting that while their devices often successfully connect to the available networks, they struggle to establish actual internet access. Reliable connectivity at beaches is deemed particularly crucial, offering a lifeline for visitors who may need to conduct essential online activities such as making voice or video calls, sending urgent messages, booking ride-sharing services, utilizing digital payment platforms for transactions, or maintaining contact with family and friends in bustling environments.

The GCC first introduced Wi-Fi smart poles in 2021, establishing a presence at 49 different locations. These earlier installations provided users with a more limited 30 minutes of free internet access per day, contingent upon a one-time password (OTP) verification process. However, reports indicate that the connectivity quality from these initial poles has degraded over time, leading to a surge in user complaints and a diminished user experience. In a proactive move to rectify these issues and improve the overall system, the civic body is also embarking on a comprehensive refurbishment of nearly 2,600 existing smart poles. These poles are distributed across approximately 900 locations throughout the city, encompassing a wide range of public spaces including parks, hospitals, and government offices.

To ensure the efficacy of the network, internet service providers have been formally instructed to undertake repairs of any damaged infrastructure and to implement measures that guarantee enhanced and stable connectivity. GCC Commissioner G.S. Sameeran highlighted that currently, 38 Wi-Fi poles are under the active maintenance of ACT Fibernet and Reliance Jio, specifically along the popular stretches of Marina and Besant Nagar beaches. These private service providers have been further directed to broaden the scope of public Wi-Fi coverage. In an effort to gain deeper insights into user behavior and the effectiveness of the service, the Corporation has also requested usage data from ACT Fibernet, aiming to analyze internet consumption patterns and monitor how the public is engaging with the Wi-Fi facilities.

As this public Wi-Fi network expands its reach, cybersecurity emerges as a paramount concern. Users are increasingly vocal in their calls for robust security measures to be implemented, emphasizing the need for strong safeguards against potential threats such as hacking, data theft, and other forms of security breaches that can plague open public networks. The ultimate success of this widespread public Wi-Fi initiative will undoubtedly hinge on its ability to deliver consistently stable internet connectivity while simultaneously ensuring the stringent protection of users’ personal information and digital privacy.
