As reported by Metro Sport on Friday, July 31, 2026, Chelsea Football Club is reportedly open to entertaining transfer offers for their young striker, Liam Delap. This news comes at a crucial juncture, with the upcoming Premier League season on the horizon and several clubs expressing interest in the forward’s services. Notably, Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Leeds United are all understood to be closely monitoring Delap’s situation.Delap’s move to Stamford Bridge last summer was a significant one, costing Chelsea an estimated £30 million to secure his signature from Ipswich Town.
His acquisition followed a period where he had garnered considerable attention from a number of high-profile clubs, including Manchester United, who were also reportedly keen on the talented young attacker. However, the 23-year-old’s inaugural campaign with the London-based club proved to be a challenging one.
A combination of persistent injury concerns and suspensions significantly hampered his ability to consistently feature, ultimately limiting his impact on the pitch. He managed to find the back of the net on just two occasions across 41 appearances, a tally that fell short of expectations.Furthermore, Delap frequently found himself playing second fiddle to other attacking options within the squad.
For a considerable portion of the season, Joao Pedro was often preferred in the starting lineup, pushing Delap further down the pecking order. The situation has since become even more competitive following the arrival of Xabi Alonso as the new head coach. Alonso has wasted no time in bolstering the team’s attacking arsenal, with Emmanuel Emegha already completing a move from Strasbourg.
Additionally, experienced forward Danny Welbeck is rumored to be on the verge of joining from Brighton & Hove Albion, further intensifying the competition for attacking berths. Nicolas Jackson’s return to Chelsea after a loan spell at Bayern Munich also adds another dynamic option, creating a crowded field of players vying for a place in the forward line.
The Metro report, which also cited information from the i Paper, suggests that Chelsea would be willing to sanction Delap’s departure if a suitable offer, falling within the range of £35 million to £40 million, is put on the table. For potential suitors, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United are believed to see Delap as a player who could provide valuable competition for their respective strikers, Chris Wood and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Meanwhile, Everton’s manager, David Moyes, is rumored to have held a long-standing admiration for Delap’s capabilities.Despite the growing speculation surrounding his future, former England international Danny Murphy has cautioned Chelsea against rushing into a sale. Speaking to Metro, Murphy emphasized the importance of giving new signings and existing players an opportunity to prove themselves.
He stated, “I think any manager coming in has to give players a chance so I think he’ll want to look at them and see what they’ve got.” Murphy also highlighted the practicalities of the transfer market, noting that “there might not be other clubs who want to take them with the wages they are on or pay the fee for them.
” He elaborated on the complexities of player movement, suggesting that simply deciding to move a player on due to underperformance doesn’t guarantee a smooth transition or a favorable financial outcome, asking rhetorically, “where to, and for how much?”Murphy drew a parallel to other players who have struggled to adapt, mentioning Alejandro Garnacho’s difficulties at Manchester United and the subsequent fan reception.
He observed that many of Chelsea’s wide attackers have also faced similar challenges, with Joao Pedro being a notable exception who has performed well.
Murphy posited that if any of Chelsea’s attackers were to depart, Garnacho might be a more likely candidate than Delap.
He concluded by advocating for Delap to be given a chance by Xabi Alonso, recognizing that the young forward possesses distinct qualities that differentiate him from other Chelsea attackers like Joao Pedro, stating, “Delap is a young lad, and he brings some characteristics that Chelsea don’t have. He’s different to Joao Pedro so I think Xabi Alonso will give him a crack.”
