A report published by the Daily Mail on Friday, July 31, 2026, has revealed a near-miss for Chelsea Football Club, averting a penalty that could have drastically altered their historical trajectory.
The London-based club managed to sidestep a points deduction so severe it would have plunged them into significant Premier League relegation peril. Investigations into breaches concerning payments made to unregistered agents and third parties during the tenure of former owner Roman Abramovich, specifically between the years 2011 and 2018, had placed Chelsea on the precipice of a potential 15-point sanction.
The Football Association’s written judgment in the case indicated that a starting point of 15 points was deemed an appropriate punishment for the club’s 74 documented violations of financial regulations. The implications of such a deduction, if applied during the 2025-26 Premier League season, would have been catastrophic, pushing Chelsea firmly into the relegation zone.
For context, Chelsea had concluded that particular campaign with a 13-point cushion above West Ham United, a team that ultimately faced relegation after accumulating just 39 points. Therefore, a 15-point penalty would have undeniably placed the Stamford Bridge outfit below the survival threshold.
However, a pivotal factor in mitigating the severity of the punishment was Chelsea’s proactive decision to self-report these potential irregularities following their acquisition by the BlueCo consortium. The club demonstrated exceptional cooperation with the investigating bodies, furnishing thousands of documents throughout the exhaustive process.
This transparency and willingness to engage were instrumental in the FA’s independent regulatory commission’s decision to reduce the initial proposed sanction.Ultimately, the commission imposed a six-point deduction, which was suspended until June 2027, alongside a substantial £10 million fine. Chelsea subsequently lodged an appeal against the suspended points deduction.
An independent appeal board, after reviewing the case, ultimately overturned this specific component of the punishment. In its place, the club was issued a suspended transfer registration ban, prohibiting them from registering new players for two transfer windows, also effective until June 2027.The financial penalty, however, remained unchanged, with the £10 million fine earmarked for investment into grassroots football initiatives.
The charges themselves were directly linked to financial activities that occurred under Roman Abramovich’s ownership and encompassed payments associated with numerous high-profile player transfers. Notable deals involving established stars such as Eden Hazard, Samuel Eto’o, Willian, Ramires, David Luiz, Andre Schurrle, and Nemanja Matic were among those scrutinized as part of the investigation.
It is crucial to note that no allegations of impropriety have been leveled against any of the players involved. The current ownership group at Chelsea is credited with uncovering these possible historical financial irregularities during their due diligence process for the takeover in 2022.
Upon discovery, they promptly and voluntarily disclosed these issues to the relevant football authorities, including the FA, the Premier League, and UEFA, setting in motion the investigative proceedings.
