In a shocking turn of events, gunmen have reportedly launched a brazen attack on operatives from the Anambra State Police Command, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least two officers. This unsettling incident occurred just as the state had been enjoying a period of relative peace, following a concerted and persistent effort to dismantle criminal elements, especially those armed groups that have operated under the guise of local separatist movements.
The attack unfolded on Sunday night along the Awa–Ndiukwuenu–Ufuma Road, where police officers were conducting a routine patrol. In a calculated ambush, the assailants opened fire on the officers, leaving a grim scene in their wake, with at least two police personnel lying lifeless on the roadside.
A nearby commercial tricycle operator, commonly referred to as a keke rider, became an inadvertent eyewitness to the harrowing incident. The rider, who was traversing the route during the attack, described the chaos that ensued when he suddenly heard the sound of gunfire erupting ahead. Instinctively, he abandoned his tricycle and sought refuge in the nearby bush, fearing for his life.
In a poignant voice note he recorded after the danger had passed, the keke rider recounted the traumatic experience: “After some time, I cautiously emerged from my hiding spot and went back to retrieve my Keke to continue my journey. It was then that I came upon the scene, where two policemen were lying motionless on the road, and their police van was parked by the roadside. I felt compelled to share this voice note on social media, hoping that someone might reach out to the police authorities. I believe one of the officers might still be clinging to life, and it’s vital that they receive immediate help,” he expressed, his voice heavy with emotional weight.
Attempts to contact the Anambra State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, were met with silence, as his phone appeared to be unreachable. As of now, there has been no official statement released by the police regarding this distressing incident, leaving the community in a state of confusion and fear.
This attack serves as a stark reminder that despite previous successes in combating crime in the region, the struggle to maintain peace and safety remains ongoing. The community is left grappling with the implications of such violence and is calling for swift justice and support for the families of the fallen officers in these harrowing times.
