Atletico Madrid booked their place in the UEFA Champions League semi-finals with a hard-fought 3-2 aggregate victory over 10-man Barcelona, despite suffering a 2-1 defeat in the second leg of their quarter-final tie on Tuesday night.
The Spanish capital club showed great resilience and defensive discipline to advance, repeating their strong performance from the first leg where they had secured a 2-0 lead. Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres gave Barcelona hope with early goals, but Ademola Lookman’s strike for Atletico proved decisive in keeping the tie in their favour.
Diego Simeone’s side reached the last four for the first time since 2017 after surviving intense pressure from the La Liga champions in a highly competitive and physical encounter at the Metropolitano Stadium.
Barcelona’s chances of forcing extra time were severely damaged when defender Eric Garcia received a red card in the closing stages for bringing down Alexander Sorloth as he raced towards goal. The sending-off left the visitors with ten men and unable to mount a late comeback.
Atletico Madrid, who have never won the Champions League and suffered painful final defeats in 2014 and 2016 under Simeone, will now face either Arsenal or Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals.
“We are very happy to have knocked out such a strong Barcelona side,” said Atletico midfielder Koke after the match. “It was a difficult game, especially at the beginning, but the team showed character and managed to get back into it.”
Barcelona, who last lifted the Champions League trophy in 2015, saw their wait for a sixth title extended once again. Midfielder Frenkie de Jong remained positive despite the elimination, saying the club is clearly moving in the right direction.
“We gave everything on the pitch and tried our best. I believe we played a very good game overall. Luck just wasn’t on our side tonight, but we are growing as a team every year and we must continue on this path,” de Jong said.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick had made several bold changes to his starting lineup, benching star forwards Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski in favour of Ferran Torres and Gavi to increase pressing intensity against Atletico.
The visitors started the match with high energy in a fiery atmosphere. Goalkeeper Juan Musso was forced into an early save to deny Lamine Yamal after just 32 seconds. Yamal then opened the scoring in the fourth minute, capitalising on a mistake by Clement Lenglet to slot the ball past Musso.
Ferran Torres doubled Barcelona’s lead in the 24th minute with a well-taken finish, levelling the aggregate score and giving the Catalan side real hope of a comeback. However, Atletico responded strongly in the 31st minute when Marcos Llorente delivered a dangerous cross from the right, and Ademola Lookman converted to pull one back on the night.
The second half saw continued pressure from Barcelona, but their momentum was halted when Ferran Torres had a goal disallowed for offside. As the match became increasingly tense, tempers flared with several players from both sides sustaining minor injuries.
The decisive moment came when Eric Garcia was shown a red card for fouling Alexander Sorloth, leaving Barcelona short-handed in the final stages. Despite throwing centre-back Ronald Araujo forward as an extra attacker, they could not find the crucial third goal needed to force extra time.
Atletico Madrid held firm through eight minutes of stoppage time to secure their place in the semi-finals, showcasing the fighting spirit that has defined Simeone’s tenure at the club.
