Arthur Okonkwo’s transfer of allegiance from England to Nigeria has been verified by FIFA.
Late last year, the Wrexham custodian made the decision to play for the Super Eagles. The 24-year-old never received a senior cap for the Three Lions despite playing for England at the Under-16 and U-18 levels.
Born in Camden, England, Okonkwo’s parents made him eligible to play for the dominant African team. Regretfully, the Super Eagles’ qualification play-off loss to DR Congo means he won’t play for Nigeria at the 2026 World Cup.
Last month, DR Congo defeated Jamaica in their intercontinental play-off match. The Leopards won 1-0 and earned their first World Cup spot in 52 years thanks to a goal from Axel Tuanzebe in extra time.
When the Nigerian Super Eagles play Poland and Portugal in friendly games in June, Arthur Okonkwo might make his debut.
Okonkwo joined the Gunners from Lindus Park in 2009 and advanced through the academy.
He had loan stints with Austrian team Sturm Graz in 2023 and Crewe Alexandra in 2022 while he was a member of the team.
Okonkwo signed a permanent contract with the Red Dragons two years ago after joining Wrexham on loan for the 2023–2024 campaign.
He has since established himself as a key member of Phil Parkinson’s team. Since Hollywood celebrities Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became majority shareholders in February 2021, Wrexham has had an incredible few years.
The team has advanced from the National League to the Championship throughout that time.
Wrexham is still very much in the running for the play-offs, but they will have to fight hard to earn a spot in the Premier League.
