After a calm performance against Bayer Leverkusen, Mikel Arteta’s squad advanced to the round of eight. They drew 1-1 in Germany before winning 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium.
Despite losing to Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final, their unblemished European record this season has bolstered prospects of a deep campaign.
On the other hand, sports enter with tremendous momentum. The Portuguese team made an incredible comeback with a 5-0 victory in Lisbon to advance 5-3 overall after being destroyed 3-0 by Bodo/Glimt in Norway.
They last made it this far in the previous European Cup in 1983, so this is the first time they have advanced to the quarterfinals in the Champions League era.
They have already defeated Paris Saint-Germain this season, and they crushed Manchester City last season.
People in the club think another upset is conceivable because of their ability to rise to significant events.
Former Sporting full-back Virgílio, who played during the team’s 1982–83 season, thinks the current team is capable of causing Arsenal issues.
He declared, “Sporting has the quality and conditions to beat any of these teams.” “We’ve already defeated numerous teams, including Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester City. It’s another one now. We will have an advantage if we put in more effort than Arsenal.
On paper, Arsenal will be the favourites, but the Premier League leaders cannot ignore Sporting’s athleticism and comeback.
The Portuguese team has a history with the Gunners as well; four years ago, they eliminated them from the Europa League on penalties.
Another member of Sporting’s 1980s squad, Carlos Xavier, cautioned that both teams will find the match to be “extremely complicated.”
“Sporting has its weapons, but Arsenal is in a terrific moment. Anything is possible. They have nothing to lose.
Even though Arsenal prevailed 5-0 in their most recent encounter in 2024, there is still a feeling that this disciplined, aggressive, and optimistic Sporting team could present a much tougher fight.
