Samson Itodo, the Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, has voiced serious concern about recent comments by some presidential candidates indicating that they would not pursue legal remedies if they were defeated in the 2027 elections.
During a recent media engagement on electoral integrity, the prominent civil society leader described this kind of political rhetoric as deeply troubling and potentially harmful to Nigeria’s democratic stability.
Itodo explained that, although the judicial system has acknowledged shortcomings, it remains an essential component of the democratic electoral process. In his view, dismissing the courts before an election has even taken place could weaken confidence in constitutional institutions, encourage political tensions, and create conditions in which disputes are handled through violence or other unlawful means rather than through peaceful legal procedures. The Yiaga Africa leader also stressed the importance of transparent and credible results management by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
He noted that clear procedures for collecting, verifying, and announcing election results are vital to building public confidence and reducing the likelihood that candidates and their supporters will turn to prolonged post-election litigation. At the same time, he urged all political contenders to respect established democratic processes and to direct any complaints about the conduct or outcome of an election to the appropriate legal tribunals.
Itodo warned against self-help and against statements that could encourage supporters to pursue extrajudicial action. His comments reflect growing concern among civil society organizations about rising political tensions and the potential risks to democratic order as Nigeria approaches its next national elections.
