The recent abduction of 45 school children and seven teachers in Oyo State has left the entire nation in shock. This severe kidnapping incident has worsened after the terrorists involved, who also killed one teacher during the attack, released a disturbing list of conditions they want in exchange for the release of their captives.
The Disturbing Demands of the Kidnappers; Reports indicate that the kidnappers have made several strict demands that are politically and ideologically motivated. They are asking for: – A ransom of ₦1 billion, which they want deposited into an offshore account in Benin Republic. – The immediate release of convicted terrorists currently held in Agodi and Abolongo correctional facilities. – The provision of two operational Hilux vehicles. – A major change in Oyo State’s laws to allow the implementation of Sharia law.
VerydarkmanVerydarkman Raises Alarm Over Sharia Law Demands Prominent social commentator VerydarkmanvDVerydarkman (VDM) has expressed serious worries about these developments, particularly the demand for Sharia law in an area that has a mix of different religions. VDM believes these demands highlight a dangerous agenda that threatens the unity of Nigeria.
He pointed out that this situation can remind one of Nigeria’s history, particularly the campaigns led by Usman Dan Fodio aimed at expanding Islam. VDM warned that modern insurgents seem to be trying to bring back such historical efforts to impose Islam in the region. However, he was careful to stress that most Muslims in Nigeria do not agree with or support these extremist views.
Risk Faced by the Kidnapped Victims In his video commentary, VDM discussed the complicated religious dynamics in Nigeria. He mentioned that extremist groups often do not consider Yoruba Muslims as “real Muslims.” There have been instances where some of these groups refused to pray in Yoruba mosques, revealing a significant ideological divide.
One alarming point mentioned by VDM is that during kidnappings, radical groups tend to interrogate Muslim hostages. If these hostages do not follow the form of Islam that the terrorists consider to be correct, they could be executed on the spot, while non-Muslims may survive as part of ransom negotiations.
Urgent Call for Government Action As insecurity continues to rise, various public figures are urging the government to take action instead of just making empty statements. Activist Hilda Dokubo recently challenged the administration, saying that citizens need real solutions and not just promises.
Similarly, VDM highlighted that the government’s slow response to these crises is only making these criminal groups more powerful. “Every day, these groups are getting stronger,” VDM warned. “What is the government doing about this? If we do nothing, this agenda will keep spreading.” As the situation unfolds, the urgency for effective government intervention cannot be overstated. The safety of those kidnapped and the stability of the region depend on immediate and decisive actions.
