What commenced as a social media discourse between the contentious activist VeryDarkMan (VDM) and a self-proclaimed benevolent benefactor, Kingmitchy, has escalated into one of the most theatrical online narratives of late.
The turmoil commenced when Kingmitchy disseminated an edited video through social media, asserting that she had completed renovations to a public school in Delta State within a mere six days.
In the footage, she candidly asserted that Seyi Tinubu provided financial support for her renovation endeavors. In a subsequent post, she appeared to criticize VDM, imploring him to cease meddling in the affairs of others and redirect his focus toward his foundation. She further insinuated that VDM had amassed contributions for school renovations over the past two years without yielding any tangible outcomes.VDM retaliated in a series of videos, charging Kingmitchy with exploiting the project for the sake of public attention. He also implicated Seyi Tinubu, the son of President Bola Tinubu, whom Kingmitchy had persistently cited as a benefactor for her philanthropic initiatives and educational project. VDM posited that Kingmitchy was being utilized as a political pawn and questioned the rationale behind her selection for the renovation task rather than engaging the Ministry of Education. The dispute escalated when a member of VDM’s circle, known as Ratel and identified as Linus, visited the school that Kingmitchy claimed to have refurbished. His observations revealed that only three classrooms had been repaired, with incomplete ceilings, and a borehole project that lacked both an overhead tank and a supply of running water. Reports indicated that the classrooms appeared notably derelict.
This disclosure incited indignation among netizens, many of whom accused Kingmitchy of inflating her contributions. Her comment section was inundated with derision, and later that evening, she disseminated a video insinuating that she had ingested a toxic substance. Shortly thereafter, a post materialized on her page proclaiming her demise.Suspecting he was being set up, VDM orchestrated a comparable stunt. He shared a video depicting himself consuming a mysterious liquid and even went so far as to stage a simulated burial, which rapidly attained viral status. Three days later, he reemerged in another video, theatrically “arising from the dead.”
VDM expressed his contrition to Nigerians who were unsettled by the incident. He asserted that he fabricated his demise to evade what he characterized as a clandestine scheme to apprehend him and attribute the purported suicide attempt of Kingmitchy to him.Concurrently, Seyi Tinubu released a communiqué on his authenticated Instagram account, dissociating himself from the turmoil. He declared that the insinuations connecting him romantically to Kingmitchy were unfounded.
I encountered Mitchy on a solitary occasion within a public forum in the company of others and provided monetary support to her NGO, as I have previously done for numerous young Nigerians and various organizations. There was never any clandestine meeting, covert arrangement, or misconduct,” he stated.
The occurrence has once more illuminated the perils of disinformation and sensationalism on social media platforms, where flamboyant narratives proliferate at a pace that exceeds that of substantiated truths. As analysts remark, in the era of viral phenomena, veracity frequently emerges as the initial victim.
